Hey fellas,
my dad needs some help deciding wich camera he should buy for under $1000. I have a DVX and he lives in another state so he asked me to post here for your recommendations. Basically he is filming video from a high quality projector and wants to output to dvd or internet. He doesnt need the "movie" look or anything, he just wants to make sure that whatever he buys will be able to capture the highest quality image from his projection. Any great recommendations? I know nothing besides the dvx and xl2 :)

He should think past current project. Features I would like to have in consumer-cam.

Headphone and mic jacks
Manual focus and exposure (probably important to him NOW)
High optical zoom (20x or more would be nice)
Good in low-light
Infrared mode
Big LCD
Fits nicely in hands
Easy, intuitive controls (very subjective, gotta handle it. SOme people like on-screen, others prefer buttons)
Able to change tape without removing from tripod (will be hard to find if important)
Firewire, svideo, and rca in/out
hot shoe vs not hot.

Choose which features are important to him, based on what he thinks he might do. I agree that 24p and 16x9 not important for most people. Image on most will be similar for his app, if he sticks with brand DV cameras in $500-$700 range) . If he really wants a better image, he should look at 3CCD cameras (Panny or Sony ), but that gets him from $500 range up to $1500.

If there's any way he'd be willing to go a little over $1000, he'd get a lot of bang for his buck from the Panasonic GS400 which sells (from legitimate sources) for as low as $1100-$1200.
