GH4 Best Cage for the GH4 with locking device for it's HDMI connector.

So, the cage I got from Came-tv was really nice, but I discovered that if using it with gh4, you can't change battery (it is like 0.2mm covered). but it does work well with the canon or a7s. We have finalized our set to make it flexible with the 24shots Silencer Lite motorized follow focus system. it works well for our settings and you can adjust to have the shoulder pad under or a slight behind with weight.

I also have a cheap $100 cage that I decided to try it out with a follow focus rail system and although it doesn't lined up, it still can be used with rail and a follow focus. So, at the end, now I have a heavy rig and a simpler cage/rig.

The clamp on the Honu Fhugen Cage can be quite solid if you put a good piece of rubber between each jaw (in U-shape) and apply pressure before locking it. I can post a pic later to show exactly what I did if anyone wants to see, it works like a charm.

I've got the Varavon cage which I'm very pleased about. Only the clamps aren't so good. So I'm thinking about making a mixture of that cage and the Lockport. I might have to tweak and break some stuff though..

This is my GH3 & GH4 set up; I’m using the CAME-TV Cage for the GH4 with Handle HT-GH4 Armor, A Edelkrone Monitor/EVF Holder and a Juiced Link BMC388 Pre Amp. As for a HDMI Clamp, I'll try the Coollcd SmallRig HDMI Lock 1412 it looks like the best soloutionView attachment 94096.

Vardalos,
How do you like the edelkrone monitor/evf holder? I was thinking of getting one but have heard about quality issues with edelkrone equipment?

I love the Edelkrone monitor/EVF holder I often use it with a Small HD DP4 EVF or a larger 7" Marshall Monitor, it works well with both. If you get one you wont be disappointed.

Wooden Camera GH4 Zacuto EVF Rig WM.jpg

Finally getting this YAGH rig done. So far so good. I'm using the Wooden Camera Cage and EVF with the Zacuto EVF flipped. I have a front rail mount coming from Wooden Camera that mounts to the cage and puts rails at the right height. Nice to not worry about locking the HDMI port with the YAGH.

GH4 Zacuto EVF with Knob WM.jpg

I picked up a 1/4 - 20 knob from Home Depot and it works great for tool-less operation. It's 3/4" long and didnt think it would work but it's solid. Also added a washer since the Zacuto EVF has a plastic anti swivel feature built into the top.

Any ideas on a camera trigger?

Nice & clean! Is the HDMI lag improved with the YAGH?

As for a tripper there's always...

No. It's really bad and I'm hoping it gets fixed in the next update. I'll look into the kino grips. I bet they are pricey too :-D

I'm thinking a zoom lens with manual iris is also a must since controlling a electronic lens isn't doable. Need to find that go to run and gun. Any thoughts people?

I looked at every cage I could find. I wanted one that I could use with the foot on the Metabone Speedbooster. It just doesn't make sense to me to not support the Speedbooster and take the torque off the MFT mount. If something fails, I would rather it be the adapter than the mount on the camera body. The Viewfactor Studios offering would allow the foot to remain in place, but the screw on the front of the rod mount didn't look like it would allow for the foot support.

I ended up buying the CUBECAGE GH4 from Motion9. Even though it has a twist prevention buttress around the lower part of the lens mount, it looked like it wouldn't interfere with the Speedbooster's support foot. And it almost doesn't. But, the foot has a flange on the back side that hit a part of the cage and wouldn't allow the Speedbooster to be mounted onto the camera. I removed the foot and spent 10 minutes with a grinder and removed most of the offending flange. Now, everything works perfectly and it is quick and easy to swap out the Speedbooster with a PL mount.

I wasn't crazy about the cable lock that came with the cage. So, I opted for the SmallRig Adjustable Height HDMI Lock. I added a Micro HDMI to full size HDMI adapter and the SmallRig lock holds it firmly in place. So, now I can leave the adapter attached to the camera and use cables with full size connectors.

The other thing I did was use a quick release top handle with a NATO rail on top of the cage. So far, I am pretty happy with the cage after the mods. I had a pretty demanding 2 day shoot the day after the cage came in and I did the modification to the foot. The cage worked exactly the way I needed it to.

Here is a picture of the Speedbooster with the foot re-installed after the trip to the grinder.
