GH4 Best Cage for the GH4 with locking device for it's HDMI connector.

FYI, Here's how I rigged the HDMI lock on the Honu cage. Instead of directly securing a cable, I secured a micro to full-sized adapter between the lock and piece of high density foam. This ensures that the piece that directly connects to the camera is rock solid, and that there is something that can fail (the cable to the adapter) before the fragile camera port. Bonus is that it's a lot easier to find full size HDMI cables of any size.

Hi Joe12South, do you have a speedbooster? Can you post some photos with it attched and clearance or camera plates etc on the Honu cage? That's without using the riser. Thanks! :)

Anyone know of a cage for the GH4 + Yagh ? I know wooden camera make one but its seriously over priced imo

Cheers !

I actually use the "Lens Turbo" Chinese knock-off, which doesn't have a lens support piece. I have rented the Speed Booster, but just about the first thing I did was remove the lens support, so I don't know how it fits on the Honu. (I use a separate lens support that mounts to the rails when I need it.)

I didn't like handholding the cage and because I keep the camera in it all the time I made myself a nice walnut side grip for hand holding.

Could you give some details on how you made a handle? Especially how it attaches to the cage? I need exactly this because as you said, other than the lack of a handheld grip there is no reason to ever remove the cage. The only handle I could find online only attached via one point, and so it was impossible to keep it from twisting out of place.

The only pics I have handy are on twitter.

I carved it out of a block of walnut (I made an aaton style grip previous and had left over wood) with a small hand saw, rasp, drill and sandpaper. I attached it with some 1/4 20 screws to the side of the cage. I carved a spot so I can access the card door just fine.

Very nice, Adam. I'm not sure my woodworking skills are up to the challenge, but I think I'll give it a shot. The lack of a grip is the only real complaint I have about this cage.

before I tried to make the aaton style grip and this cage grip I had no wood working experience. I spent a few hours a night over a few weeks to do it but I actually found it a nice break from the kids to just sit at my work bench, listen to music and sand away. I'm sure if you used a dremel it would be much quicker.

The grip makes the cage very easy to hand hold and I can still trigger the record with my finger. I just ordered the honue handle and hdmi pinch as it wasn't available when I got this for the gh3. Once those arrive it will feel like a complete cage system.

That's all the reason I need!

Just out of interest, where did you get a chunk of walnut from?

I was lazy and ordered it online from North Carolina and they shipped it to me in Toronto. I was having trouble sourcing a chunk wide enough locally and it was easier to just pay a little more and have it arrive at my door.

If you want any particular angles of mine I can shoot some stills as reference.

Hey Paul, MotionNine emailed me a flyer on this unit a month or so ago, currently have the Varavon Armor cage which is a nightmare for button and knob access, plus I had to adapt a CoolLcd HDMI clamp for it, which works really well securing the cable... that's abut the only part that does! For a guy with big hands, what's access to the control buttons on the right like with the motionnine cage. With the varavon I currently use a car key to turn the GH4 off and press the WB button!!! Causes a few raised eyebrows!!

When I received the email from MotionNine, I was very unsure about the cable clamp system, it's a looooong way from the cage and hex screw anchoring can be a pain when one has to change rigs part way through the day, much prefer thumb wheels.

Also, once the handle is in place are there options for mounting a Nato mounting rail or is one restricted to single hole mounting for accessories?

Batutta, I find you tag very appropriate for the ebay listing you posted. Sums up the Indian products perfectly except that they don't quit and keep conning people with badly made copies which are garbage. I have been caught by their deception recently with a Mattebox under a completely new name which I didn't recognise until I complained about the quality. The reply email came from Filmcity... I groaned!

This looks to be based on the Konu cage and I have no doubt is poorly made like everything else they produce.

I am quickly realising that the new manufacturing region to take serious notice of is South Korea, they are producing very well made equipment and coming up with original designs. Seriously considering http://motionnine.com/portfolio/cube-cage-gh4gh3/ as the alternative to the Varavon as CoolLCD are being rather slow with their 3 point mounting half cage.
