Best audio gear for WIND

Hi. What is the best shotgun microphone/windscreen setup to use in major wind (budget is no issue). I am starting to record lots of audio outside and I just can't seem to fight the wind off and get super clean recordings. Also, would a very specific cardioid unidirectional pickup pattern mic help too?

Thank you.

Thank you..okay, maybe budget is a little bit of an issue, haha...something less than 1500?

If you have the right wind screening, the mic isn't the issue.

RØDE NTG-2 or NTG-3, Sennheiser, Schoeps... any of these need to be in a blimp (zeppelin) and in really high winds also coved with a furry sock (sometimes called a dead cat or dead wombat).

And in most outdoor situations, a "very specific unidirectional pickup pattern" isn't going to have the kind of side rejection that a shotgun will have. But if you are using a smaller mic, such as a hypercardioid, will still need the right screening: a baby ball gag and a fur cover.

There are great blimp and fur cover kits with suspension mounting available from RØDE and Rycote.

I actually have an NTG3...so do you recommend any specific brands (from RODE/Rycote)?...blimp, dead cat, etc?

The RØDE blimp system is functional and affordable and works very well with the NTG-3. It's a little heavier than others, which may be an issue. I use it with my NTG-3 and have no wind issues.

Rycote windshield kits are fantastic, and lighter-weight, but cost more. I think the Windshield Kit 4 is sized for the NTG-3.

Both come with everything you need: suspension mount, zeppelin, fur cover.

Budget is an issue for me, and from what I've been reading on this forum, I'm planning on purchasing a Rode blimp system.

Rycote makes an interesting product called Hi-wind cover.
It is a kind of glove that sits on top of the windscreen (Zeppelin). Then you put the furry over again. All this provides excellent attenuation even the strongest wind.
One of the microphones that are less sensitive to the wind is the Neumann KR-82i.

I think you'll like the Rode Blimp NorBro. I did a little shootout with it against the Rycote S-Series, and they both did well, but the Rode did a little better I think.
