Best 5D Picture style settings for film

Hey guys i've been a previous 7D owner, and I knew how important the picture style settings were, regarding obtaining the best image for use with narrative films. My problem is that I'm assuming it might be as equally important with the 5D as well, but alas, I've been unable to locate any specific threads conversing this topic.

So can someone help me out, and either recommend their favorite settings, with links to possible samples, or post some links to previous threads, on this board or on others with regards it?

Thanks fellas, appreciate it.

neutral setting
0 sharpness
-4 contrast
-2 saturation

These are the settings that most pro shooters have agreed give the most dynamic range and latitude in post. I shoot everything with these settings.

Thanks, Squig. What about highlight tone priority - is it ever useful for video?

What makes these iso's cleaner?

Screw squig, I want in on this thread . . . .

It's complex(ish) - basically the next ISO above each of these clean ISO's is 'real' - the intermendiates are digitally generated from the real ISOs - and the ISO just below the real ISO is cleaner because it is digitally pulled back before compression . . . . or something like that !

Erm . . . .

The result is that ISO 1250 is cleaner than 800 and 640 is cleaner than 400.

The magic clean ISOs to stick to if you want cleaner footage:

160, 320, 640, 1250, 2500, 5000 . . .

squig-

Thanks for the info. I've been experimenting with a few different picture styles lately and I can't say that I've found a clear winnter. I have tried neutral setting
0 sharpness
-4 contrast
-2 saturation.

However, I find the footage a bit soft. Maybe I haven't spent enough time with it in CC, but that has been my initial impression. Has anyone else experience this?

Yes it's a bit soft with sharpness all the way down. Nice and soft, I would say. Some people add sharpness in post but I usually don't.

I've heard, or at least experienced it with my 7D, so I'm not sure about the 5D; that by diminishing the in cam sharpness it SIGNIFICANTLY decreases the amount of Moire artifacting. And just re-sharpening in post is a great way to balance the end result of the footage.

lol

Now I'm tending to soften it even more with diffusion filters in Magic Bullet Looks. I have the Tiffen Film Look filter kit but I prefer to make those decisions in post. The settings I'm using give you the most options in post. Some people like to burn in a look in camera. There are some good custom settings floating around here and cinema5D. I like the kodachrome setting for certain things.

Did me no good, it's still all "thanks squig we love you" and "thanks for the info squig".

I used to be someone, I had my dreams, remember the D90 stair-stepping fix ? I was a contender.

Now I am just bumming around almost finished threads looking to get a question - even a "hey, anyone know how to turn the camera off ?"

D90? stair step? whadutalkinaboudwillis?

If only Nikon had done a firmware update, I really liked that D90 look. Well the Dxx isn't far away maybe you'll get another 15 minutes.

you should have gone to Canon with a slab of beer last week like I did.

Yeah, that was my fix - the D90 Stair-Stepping Removal - 61,000 hits and counting, do you want to talk about it, I can tell you all about it, my thinking behind the epochal breakthrough, what I ate that morning, the shoes I had on, I can scan the shoes in and send you a JPEG, it would be no trouble at all, honestly ?

I was big back then, people used to PM me to invite me to threads all over the forums "Please Lee, why don't you join us guys in the 'HPX500 with Firestore FS100' thread over in the HPX500 forum, there are loads of people there who would love to meet you, they have cake too"

Now all I get is "Hey, aren't you the guy who killed that dog ?"
