GH4 Best 5-7" monitor for under $300?

How is the MustHD M601 working out?

How is the MustHD M601 working out?

Now that you've had it for a while, how are you liking the MustHD 5.6" monitor? I have their 7" (M701H), but I want something smaller for use with my Ronin gimbal and my shoulder rig. The 7" monitor is quite nice for the money, but just too bulky.

Resurrecting an old thread:

Any thoughts now on a reasonably-price monitor to use with a DSLR such as the gh4? I have a cheap Chinese knock-off that finally died. Need something else. Would like more than focus, but ability to get a great image as well.

I'm using the Aputure FineHD VS-1. $200. Native 1080p. Nice and sharp. Fairly bright. Can adjust RGB channels individually. Very light, although the batteries (Sony NP-F series) can make it heavier. Comes with a d-tap cable so if you have a v-mount battery system it's ready to plug in. Don't care for the sunshade it comes with. And it takes about 15-20 seconds to boot up, which makes shutting it off between takes to conserve battery a hassle. The VS-2 has peaking and false color and is a bit more expensive, but the GH4 peaking shows up nicely on this monitor so you don't have to spend on it if you don't need false color. One benefit I didn't realize, is that the resolution of the peaking on the GH4 is dependent on the monitor resolution. I often find the peaking on the camera LCD too chunky and obtrusive, but on the 1080p monitor, it is more refined and isn't as distracting.

So most monitors can't monitor 4k only 1080p?

Keep in mind 1080 on a 5" or 7" monitor already uses some extremely tiny pixels. A retina iPhone6 has 326 pixels per inch which is what a 7" 1080p monitor has. A 5" 1080p has 440 pixels per inch. If somebody managed to cram 4k on a 5" monitor you are talking 880 pixels per inch which is absolutely insane and a complete waste of money. No human eye could ever see that. I develop retina mobile apps and 326 is already beyond most people seeing individual pixels.

There is just little practical reason to put 4k on a monitor that small other than to market it as a 4k display so people will pay a lot more for it. Unless you attach a huge loupe to the monitor to magnify what the eye sees you will never see a difference.

thanks for your reply;
one of the comments says that the lag is a Panasonic issue; just hoping someone else could confirm if that is the case
