best 24pa settings

So lets see if i have this straight:

24p and 30p - Regular NTSC timeline
24p - 24p timeline (only with standard pull down in Cine Tools)
24pa - 24p timeline (regular 24p timline as long as captured with 24p advanced pull which is automatic in FCP)

So is it better to shoot in 24pa ?

What if you shot 24PA and want to so some slo-mo stuff. slo-mo stuff was shot at 60i with high shutter speeds. how will that 60i footage mesh with the 24PA footage on a 23.98 timeline if it's slowed down to 60%? Is there an optimal speed (%) it should be slowed down to?

Thanks

You want to slow it down to 40% (24 is 40% of 60). It should yield very smooth slo-mo. You'll lose some resolution in the 60i stuff, though. But don't sweat it.

If you're going to edit in 24p, always shoot 24pA.

If you have 24p footage, always edit in 24p if you can.

Ergo, always shoot 24pA.

The only time you might not want to edit 24p in a 24p timeline is if you're mixing it with other frame rates, and you want to favor those other frame rates (e.g., want to keep the "video look" of 60i -- or, if you're mixing with 30p at all). But if you have 24p and only 24p, yeah, ALWAYS edit in 24p.

Thanks, so I should have no problems (besides the resolution loss you mentioned) with the varied frame rates on the 23.98fps timeline? I guess the re-timing to 40% nullifies the frame rate differences? This is my 1st time doing slo-mo with DVX. Figure I'd give it a try, some peeps up here have done it nicely.

Thanks again.
