Best $1000 camera????

I have $1000 bucks and I want to buy the best brand new camcorder I can afford with that money in US or Canada. I am a cinematography student so I want this camera for making some exercises. I am looking mainly for manual features, good sound quality and good video quality. Help me please.

At that price and looking to buy new the only choice is the HV20/HV30. But it's a trade off with no manual features or good sound (forget about "good" sound on any camera, get an external mic). Save up a bit more and get a used DVX100.

HV30 all the way for that budget.
I just bought the Sennheiser MK 400 shotgun mic. It works great.

The problem is that for under $1000 you're still in consumer territory when, if you want to really learn about filmmaking and get some control, you want to be in prosumer territory. I'd see if you can find a used DVX100 for a little more. Sure it's SD but it's still a great camera and you'll get a lot more out of it.
