SHORT: Bergmensch

Funny! It popped up for me on YouTube (I watch some nobudge every now and then) and I thought it looked interested. Will give it a proper look later, but here's my first praise, the title was eye catching for me. German? Yiddish? Mountain people?

thank you! This is the first response where someone has liked the title. We like it a lot, but it seems very few out there do, but the short seems to be getting some positive reception. Please watch in HD when you do (or else it'll look super muddy).

If you like it enough that you want a Prores export, PM me and I'll e-mail you a download link.

Either way, very excited to read your thoughts.

Really enjoyed that. I know very little about Jewish customs (although according to my DNA test I have some Jewish blood (old time Spain does that)) so I have trouble parsing a lot of what is happening.

This is my experience: candles galore (you said the flames were CGI, I assume people were holding "LED candles"?) so I guess it is a celebration, good old small community gossip, young alienated dude, do they want him to sleep with his cousin? (incest is wincest?) weirdly long wee looking a Goyaesque painting, walk across time, witness "your roots" (I'd say Russian because I did 5 years of Russian back in the day, but it is long mostly gone and had some awkward encounter with other Slavs that did not appreciate the mix-up, plus the "live" painting), come back to celebration and feel less alienated/appreciate your community?

Even without rationally understanding what's going on, I enjoyed the look (filters instead of smoke or was it all in the grade? Sometimes borders seemed to duplicate in a manner that alternates between dreamy (during "dinner") and confusing (the tree branches) and also enjoyed the vibe the main actor put out.

Overall, I enjoyed it and I think I actually enjoy it more because there's a bit of that "not understanding", otherness that leaves me thinking that there's more, which is often a nice feeling to have.

Congrats!

Aram, thank you so much for watching! We definitely want takes in our trying to get across a lot without being direct- we also want the tone to carry it and leave viewers thinking so it sounds like for you we've accomplished a lot of that, though I do want to directly say there's absolutely no incestual messaging in here. I'll probably post more about the story and our intents as more people comment, just because I want to see how well our ideas are coming across. Thank you so much again for watching. It's nice to have a little dialogue about this just because it didn't get in to the festivals I submitted to, and they're all remote anyway.

As far as the q and a, a lot of our responses were supposed to be funny, but I think the humor is not coming through on a lot of levels- I'm so sorry about not making that clear. I figured camera/industry folks might get a kick out of the CGI bit and the personas we were putting on.

We shot with double wick candles made by House of Candles-- they are great and super bright!

The look was all pantyhose stretched loosely over the lenses. Main lens was a 25-250mm Angeniuex, and I forget what we used in the woods (they were primes, and much faster). The pickup days were unfortunately cheaper and less ideal lenses, but I think with the pantyhose it all looks pretty consistent.

Really appreciate you viewing and responding.

You definitely succeeded at suggesting ideas and feelings, instead of exposing them.

A lot of the humour came through for sure (Kubrick using all CGI!) but I gotta say, when one of you says they are good at keeping everyone stressed, I absolutely related to that (even though I try not to!). Also, the incest thing may be just that I found the actress attractive and projected on the scene. It it probably not there at all and just in my old eye.

Regarding the candles, that makes sense! I was like "Wow, that's CGI? It looks so real and the source even wavers. Did they get those LED candles that some churches use now and covered them with CGI?... Impressive!".

Changing topics. How is your experience with nobudge? I have considered joining them a few times, but I do not make enough stuff/good enoug stuff for it to be worth it for "promotional reasons".

Well thank you again for viewing. Nobudge is a great platform and has been kind to us. 2 out of our 3 projects I've submitted have gotten in, and I don't expect to always be accepted, but they have an inbuilt audience, and especially as someone who got rejected from the top festivals, it's really nice to have that built in viewership. I've found a handful of filmmakers I would have never discovered if not for nobudge.

You are having quite the run! Have you seen Shiva Baby? I had a good time and made me think of Bergmensch, shiksas and all.
