Beginner Questions

Hi all,
A new GH1 user here. I remember researching this question before but I still don't fully understand the answers that I get in some of the cases, so here it goes:-
1) What does "noise" mean? - I hear it being referred to in the forum and from what I can gather, it's not a good thing.
2) Wnat does "mud" mean? - My understanding of it is that it is where a detailed image (such as a brick wall with thousands of bricks) gets a kinda warped look running through the image making, for example, the brick wall look distorted in areas.

Oh, and another thing. Since buying my GH1, I've been delighted with the image quality, etc., but I plan on shooting a short film in the near future and my intention is to record the audio/dialog onto a separate audio device (such as the Zoom H4n) and sync the audio in post-production.

I have already posted a similar question to this one on the "audio" forum of this website and I received replies from more or less professional sound/audio engineers who state that I should be paying at least $500 for an audio device and at least $200 on an external mic, which is all way out of budget for me. I was advised to get a Zoom H4n and a Rode NTG-2 external mic which together cost (on eBay for an Irish buyer like me) over €500 (=~$600), which are too expensive for me when it comes to audio. I hoping to get some feedback from GH1 users as to what they use in terms of audio for filming. I was hoping to get a recorder and mic that would be a bit cheaper, good quality, easy to use and syncs in well in post production with the audio that is recorded on the GH1's in-built mic. I was hoping to get a recorder that has a XLR jack input too but the XLR jack input isn't a must. I've heard mixed opinions about the Zoom H1, the Zoom H2 and the Zoom H4 as audio recorders and in terms of external microphones, I'd be happy with any decent shotgun condenser mic that costs no more than €120 (=~$150). Any suggestions??

3.5mm solution.

Rode VideoMic (it is not shotgun, just stereo mic)

Sony PCM-M10

It is not very cheap ($400+shiping).
But as far as I know quality is very good.
Note that you need proper shock-mount for NTG-2.

You can see ebay for used shotgun mics. Cheap new ones are chinese and have not very good quality, as far as I know (never tested myself).

Generally proper mic placement and mount is most important, next goes mic model and next goes recorder.

Zoom H1 - not yet available.
Zoom H2 - uses cheap build-in capsules, no XLR, good for very quick interviews with 4ch. mode.
Zoom H4 - previous to H4n modes with some drawbacks. Has XLR. Ask owners about it.

Zoom H1 available this Friday the 20th. in the U.S. I pre-ordered and will report back but for $99 I'm not expecting alot, had a Sennheiser MKE 400 and the GH-1 AGC pretty much left me correcting all the audio so I'm sticking to narration for the H1-any ideas welcomed to record better audio w/ H1.

As far as I can see the audio aspect of the H1 is as good as anything else portable. The input is going to be the compromise.
As well as the onboard mics, they give you a mini-jack input, so it should be no harder than finding a good quality mic that can be cabled down to a mini jack for inputting to the H1.
Ideally something 'shotgun' or a wi-fi system for interviews.
Obviously XLR is the professional mic connector of choice, but there are some decent mic options that go to jack or mini jack.
Just so long as you don't need phantom power.
