Beginner Question

Can someone either tell me or link me to past discussions of shooting HD with other devices if you dont have the P2 card. Sorry for being a pain but I am just beginning.

If you want to stream to a laptop (i have a pc) use Canopus Edius Broadcast. I think version 4.03 is the latest, you can stream anything but 720 as there's a bug with that for some reason. I stream 1080 no problem. This is probably also the best to edit HD in for many as it handles multiple streams (3-4) well.

Final Cut Pro for Mac is supposed to be quiet good too.

You can also do searches on the Firestore HD versions. It's like a small harddrive you record to (as if it were a p2). There is a device called the Cineporter coming out in summer too. Also there's a device called the Citidisk but i've heard no good things at all about this device.

EDIUS Broadcast is in v 4.1 now. Some people are having problems with it though, and recommending sticking with 4.03. There is supposed to be another update coming soon.

For editing, EDIUS has excellent, across the board p2 integration and workflow.

For live capture you can use EDIUS or FCS, but the best capture tool (from what I have read) is by far DV Rack HD 2.0

As mentioned above, the firestore is a good, available solution. You would want to look at the Firestore FS100 for DVCPRO HD.

And, again there is the upcoming Cineporter, which is supposed to basically act as a giant p2 card, and allow you to do all the things you can with a p2 card. See the Cineporter FAQ sticky in the HVX Hardware section for more on it.

To recap:
For live capture, the best currently available option is DV Rack HD 2.0

For straight to disk recording, the best currently available option is the Firestore FS100.

Edius was on V4.10, but it is back to V4.03. Canopus pulled V4.10 because they've gotten too many complaints about it.

There are users who have been with Edius for years who felt that Canopus broke too many things in that release. They made changes to the clip / sequence selection, allowed titles that were being added to snap to existing In / Out points, the P2 Select tool now transfers clips in the background and minimizes to the System Tray while you import from your P2 card etc. that just confused the heck out of those users. And of course there are some things that just plain don't work.

Me, I like V4.10 and will stick with it.

It looks like Edius V4.13 will be released in the next day or so with a laundry list of fixes and updates.

Would you simply capture by way of firewire? New to HD as well...
You mean if you don't have a P2 card? Yes, you can capture live to a computer using a Firewire cable. If you do have a P2 card, then you can transfer the card's contents after you shoot -- on the PC that's done using USB2, on the Mac using Firewire.

If you buy the camera before March 31st 2007 from an authorized Panasonic dealer, you get a free 8GB P2 card.

Thanks for the info.

One more question... I just bought Adobe Premiere 2.0 and all the additional updates. Can you capture footage from a P2 to one of the new adobe programs?

No, Premiere doesn't support HVX or DVCPRO-HD files. You'd still need Raylight or CineForm or Serious Magic's intermediary programs.
