Beginner issues

Okay, I just got FCP Studio 2 and I'm editing a music video shot w/ a DVX100b. I shot some parts with 60i (for slow mo) and the rest with 24p. I cut and exported as a quicktime mov, but I'm having issues with pixelation and poor resolution. I burned a dvd and the picture is interlaced during the moving shots. What are the settings I should use to get the best quality picture for my DVX. As of right now, my time line is set to DV NTSC 24 under the system settings ( i believe). I maybe way off here. if anyone could suggest some tips or tutorials that are helpful for beginners it would greatly appreciated.

First, you can't drop 60i footage into a 24p or 23.98 time line and expect anything good to come of it.

Second, you need to specify which 24p mode you shot (24p or 24pA). It makes a huge difference. Neither will behave on a 24p or 23.98 timeline unless pulldown has been removed.

Third, it is highly recommended that you avoid mixing 60i and 24p footage in the same timeline.

60i is, as indicated by the "i," interlaced. To force it to a progressive time line is going to enhance the interlacing. And both flavors of 24p are actually recorded to tape at 29.97 and both contain interlaced frames due to the pulldown cadences.

To understand more about 24p, read this:

Since you have FCS 2, forget about 24p. Go with 24pA. It's a cleaner pulldown removal, and is generally easier to work with in a 24p workflow.

As for your sequence settings, whenever you change those, they take effect only to new sequences created after the setting change.

I shot 24p

Since you shot 24p, you have two options.

First, if you need to intercut 60i footage, you can use it on a 29.97 time line. The downside to that: you will have to deal with interlaced frames in the 24p footage.

Second, you can use Cinema Tools to remove the 3:2 pulldown, and then work in a 23.98 project. The downside to that: the 3:2 pulldown removal isn't as clean as the 2:3:3:2 removal from 24pA, plus you won't be able to intercut your 60i footage.
