Begginer 7D rig

Looking to start building my rig, piece by piece. Would like some guidance on what ends up getting used the most, but without any experience I don't know what that is. Not really interested in spending more than $500 on any one item. I'm guessing the evolution is
Start with
run and gun
Z-Finder DSLR

Haven't found an affordable rig for run and gun style. Do z-finders really get used in practice or do most people grow out of this style of rig? Is z-finder and camera good enough for hand holding?

moving up to shoulder mount, tripod. I like what cpmfilmtools is coming out with and could see myself investing in their systems in the future. Guess that evolution would look like,
follow focus->cage->shoulder set->lcd screen

Any advice would be appreciate. Thanks.

I'll be posting come pics and stuff later. I have a rig that I've been using for about 6 months now. It's not perfect, but it's DIRT CHEAP.

I think you won't truly be able to get a good answer until you try one for yourself. Some people are able to control their body and movements better than others. Some people need more support gear than others. It's really just a personal preference.

So to answer your question, yes, a z-finder and camera alone is sufficient for handheld use. But you might find out otherwise.

My advice is to keep the rig as minimal as possible. That's one of the great thing about these cameras. The size and weight. Some of the rigs I see people building seem a bit overkill. Again though, it's all personal preference. If having that much gear allows you to do your job better than go for it.

Just shoot with the basics before you make your decision. I bought a bunch of gear thinking I would need it and sold it all because I did not use any of it. I just did not take the time to really see what worked for me. Now All I really use is the T-finder, The Glide cam and my tripod. That is pretty much all I need. The Rapid fire from Zacuto is next for me or the newer one.

If you are looking for some stabilization and a cage for additional accessories you should check out the Halo Rig Mini... its designed for dSLRS and small cameras and very mobile if your going to want to move around while shooting.

I currently have a nice compact mount that allows you to mount a shotgun, radio receiver, and audio recorder on the DSLR cameras. They will be promoted next week at the B&H booth at NAB.
