Bebob Box-FS Review

It became an issue with me when my FS-100 popped out of the Bebob Box-FS and fell on the ground, and the face of the screen was severly scratched. I asked what would happen if after the fall my FS had failed. Reply was, "we would have worked with you on that". To me, that's as open ended and fluffy as "we have a one year warranty" with no copy of it in writting or anything.

You are repeating yourself, why is that? There was a part missing in the box you used, the fitting was not ok, but you continued using it. Now they emaild you -as they did- that you have a full year warranty on the Box: that is written proof.

Just looking at the site makes it clear: All Bebob electronic products have a 5 year warranty. (I can read German)

"Da wir sehr viel Wert auf Qualität legen, stehen wir hinter der Zuverlässigkeit und Langlebigkeit unserer Produkte: Deswegen werden alle bebob Geräte mit einer fünfjährigen Garantie angeboten."

The weak point of the Focus FS-100, it that it is attached on your belt with a flimsy firewire connection, and a hard disk is not something that likes to be 'shaken or stirred.' If you drop the FS-100, you want to claim that by Focus??

I am trying to understand you, but it is hard after three pages.

There's nothing like that in English. And "we have a one year warranty" doesn't tell me the terms of that warranty, it could mean anything, or nothing.

I did not "contiue to use it". They emailed me AFTER I returned it and after asking more than once. I'm just being honest about my experience, that's all.

What about "it's dangerous, and has no written warranty" do you not understand? I think it's very easy to understand.

Does Fosus give you a written warranty statement that they will repair/replace the Focus FS-100 if you drop it?

So now, 2 months later can we hear an update if any changes have been implemented with current Bebob Box-FS'? Does the FS100 now fasten to the drawer? Less shear pressure on the Firestore? All parts/screws in place? Thanks.

the distributor of the bebob BOX-FS in the US (www.16x9inc.com) will get in the middle of next week a batch of the newest version of the box: All the needed screws/parts are on it. There is no pressure puted onto the FS. We have modified the locking mechanism of the drawer to avoid any misuse or damage that could be caused to the FS. One locking mechanism allows to pull and push the drawer to be able to look at the display of the FS. The other mechanism unlocks the drawers from the Box and allows to take out the FS.

I will publish some pictures of the newest version tomorrow.

Hi,
I thought you had performed the upgrade sooner than I now learn is the case. Thus I've just bought the FS-Box from AbelCine in Los Angeles expecting the upgrade to already having been implemented.

I will bring the FS-box with me back to Norway next weekend for a prolonged stay in Scandinavia. Is this upgrade something you can help me with while I'm in Europe?

So, there WAS a problem with them, I'm NOT crazy!

Here are some pics of the newest update of the BOX-FS.

Basically, 4 things have been modified or added:

1) we now have the possibility to fix 15mm rods on the front of the box and move these rods up and down, as well as left-right to adapt to different cameras. This option will be available by middle of february

2) you can fix the box on the tripod through the classical VCT-14 Sony tripod plate what might be interesting for thos having an ENG Camcorder already. The needed adapter will be available by middle of February as well

3) The bottom plate at the back has beome longer to allow using the VCT-14 on one side, and to portect the FS from the bottom on the other side

4) we now have two locking mecchanism: the first one (move drawer) allow to pull the drawer from Pos1 to Pos2. The secnd one (remove FS) allow to pull the drawer from Pos2 to Pos3. Only in Pos3 you can remove the FS from the box. With this system, it isn´t possible to go from Pos1 to Pos3 in one move and to unlock the FS unintentionnaly.

Last but not least, the screw is where it belongs.

Thank you Pierre.

I received the new box today. It looks very impressive. Your commitment to your costumers' satisfaction is second to none.

Been working with the "new" Box FS now for a few days. It's VASTLY improved over the one I purchased and returned before. Very nice. The FS-100 seems to fit comfortably now, not being forcibly smashed down into the drawer. The exteded flange on the back, I guess for attching to rods, is nice to have. It's a major imporvement over the original design I had gotten.

It's still a little work to get set up on a tripod, but, there's nothing to be done about that. That's like saying, "wish rails would assymble themselves." Be sure you have the right screw driver in your gig bag (narrow head, not a normal wide head). Very nice, though. The drawer is handy.

I have to say this, it's a great product, but not for every shooting situation. Shooting from a boat (again, yeah, I do that a lot) during the first day of actual sunlight we've had since New Years, I had to repeatedly pull the FS-100 totally out, all the way, and tilt it towards me, because of the Sun. It was just too bright to read the display facing directly up. I have to stand to the side of the camera when doing out boat shoots. But that's not an Box FS issue, that's just a Sun issue.

On a land base set, in studio, on tripods, it's a great product. You have to be extra careful with cable management, as opening the drawer, if you don't think about it at first, like stupid me did, it'll yank that FW cable right out of the FS-100! CRAP! And I actually saw that coming, too. But, with a full minute of adjustment, we were back to recording again. I find a lot of the time I'm leaving the Box FS drawer open, not all the way, but at the half way stop where you can read the FS-100 display. In that set up, it's really nice.

Now if someone can explain to be just why Panasonic uses a 4-pin Firewire connector, which is flimsy, instead of the full 6-pin connector that is really stable and secure. It's not a size factor, there's plenty of room on that body for two more pins, even if you don't use them for power, you'll be using them for durability.

I actually suspect the 4-pin connector on my HVX is starting to wear down and get lose... Crap, so much money for a camera and they can't use a freakin' 6-pin FW connector! Why?

But this newer model of the Box FS, what I call version 2.0, is really nice. Love the improvements. It's a great device, your tripod and FS-100 will love it.

Hello Ben,

Thank you very much for your positive comments on the Box-fs. I´m happy that the imporvements we made did meet your requirements.

greetings,

pierre

Ben,

For hand-held shooting would you still find yourself attaching the FS100 to your belt with the Firestore clip or would you keep the Box FS attached to the HVX?

Ben, you're preaching to the choir on this one at least for me.

I can't understand why a $6000 cam uses a $.25 connector.

Panasonic, and for that matter Sony, JVC, etc should ask themselves why this is their election.
