Beats Studio 2.0 for video monitoring - good, bad or indifferent?

Yeah I would recommend a decent set of shure or sennheiser cans. Better quality than Beats, and not near as expensive.

With Beats, you're paying a whole lot for the name and a little more for a taylored sound that it anything but neutral.

Effective monitoring in the field comes from headphones with neutral response and good isolation. Look at the Sony MDR-7506 or the Sennheiser HD280.

You want clean netural sound out of monitor headphones. Beats headphones are not this. They are promoted as a great technology but it basically just boils down to an EQ preset. But you want as flat an EQ response as possible for the purposes of monitoring and mixing so as to be as predictable as possible across a range of playback equipment. Generally quality studio and monitor headphones don't sound as good as consumer headphones to the untrained ear because they are less flattering. But if you monitor with bass heavy headphones the actual uncoloured mix will be bass deficient and vice versa. Hence beats headphones only really make hip hop sound good (what they are tailored to). Classical music for example sounds terrible on them. Rock so-so.
