Beachtek vs jucielink

We've been running a tascam DR100mkii on our rig for XLR, then a padded cable into camera. This gives us the option to record directly from the recorder simultaneously as recording audio onto the footage of our 5D. Works pretty slick and can also be used in other settings as a stand alone audio recorder. Much more useful than an audio box in my opinion.

I've used the DR-40 with a pad cable and love it. I looked at the DR-100 but the 4 track dual recording feature of the DR-40 was really what sold me on it. Basically, you can record 2 channels (internal or external) at 2 levels, up to 12dB apart. So I can generally set my levels appropriately and then not worry about riding the levels to avoid peaking. Comes in handy when I'm operating as a one man shoot. I've got my audio in camera and another 2 sets at different levels on the DR-40 if needed.

Or I can use it for 4 channel recording (2 external/2 internal). The 2 internal are a nice way to pick up some room ambiance.

Ironic,
I jus ordered a Tascam DR-40 from B&H as another little backup recorder. I chose it over the Zoom H4N. :-)

Let me know what you think!

What might be the best audio set up for follow-doc style shooting if the camera in question is a 5DMKIII?

Honestly? Wireless lavs sent to a sound person who records continuously, and also sends it to you via wireless so you can record in camera as well. But if you don't have someone on sound and only have 2 channels, then give something like the DR-40 a try. Still record the audio continuously. Never know when someone says something that you want to get on tape but aren't running the camera. Even if you miss the first couple of seconds before hitting record, you'll still have the audio and will be able to L cut it.

I use a Beachtek DXA-2T WITH A RODEPRO MIC and Lectrosonic 100 fow wireless the dxa-2t no need of battery and clean sound been using it 3 times happy withit and price is good.

I should have looked into the DR40 more I guess. I didn't realize it was a 4 channel recorder. I wonder why the DR100 is more expensive? Better pre amps or something?

Possibly, but I've never had a noise issue with the DR40. DR100 has more physical controls, like gain controls on the side. With DR40 it's menu driven. Not really an issue for me because of the dual recording feature. Set it and (mostly) forget it... until there's a change of subject, location....

Here's a very good article on the differences: http://dancarrphotography.com/blog/2012/01/03/new-tascam-dr-40-and-dr-100-mkii-for-dslr-audio/
