Beachtek DXA-SLR and Tascam DR-100

Is it possible to use the Beachtek DXA-SLR as a pre-amp for the Tascam DR-100 to get cleaner audio? If so, what is the best way to set this up? I presume you would have to use the line out on the Beachtek and input into the line in on the Tascam? How do I set the gain on each device to produce the cleanest audio?

Do you already have the DR-100, and if so, what is it about the pre-amps that you don't like?

While they certainly aren't the best, the pres in the DR-100 certainly aren't the worst (much better than the Zoom H4n), and I'm not sure how much improvement you'll see by adding the Beachtek. In fact, that may be taking a step backward.

If you don't have either already, consider the DR-100mkII or even the DR-40. The mkII, I believe, has the same pre-amps as the DR-40. I have the latter and find the pre-amps to be better than most hand-helds I've used; the only way to improve is to use something really solid such as the Sound Devices MixPre-D. As for the either/or, DR-100mkII if you don't have a good mixer in front as it has tactile level controls, and the DR-40 if you have a mixer as the new firmware update allows independent level settings and is a great "bang for the buck" recorder.

I already own them both, the thing is there is not too much wrong with the preamps on the DR-100, its just I see on here regularly people being told they can improve the quality of the audio by using a dedicated pre-amp so I presumed the beachtek could be used in front of the DR-100 to record cleaner audio.

The problem, from my experience with those XLR adapters, is that they use the same grade of pre-amps as many of the hand-held recorders. It's kind of pointless. If you have a better pre-amp, then sure, you'll see improvement. But the Beachtek is not it.

Okay cheers Alex
