BBC - The 21st Century’s 100 greatest films

It's a good list, few of my all time favourites are there (The Pianist, Memento, Mad Max Fury Road) but was especially happy to to see the Russian film The Return on there. Didn't expect that. It's a great film with amazingly beautiful cinematography.

Lists like this are usually little more than clickbait. It's hard to get two people to agree on such a list, so you'll always have endless disputes. As the saying goes "your favorite band sucks". You can amend it to "your favorite film". I may think a film is great - and you'll tell me it sucks. So it goes. And so too with this list. To me it's almost perfectly arbitrary. There are some decent films on it, some mediocrities and some abominations - but so what, someone else will come along and dispute my take 100%. There is no real consensus. So they put up a list like this, knowing it'll cause controversy and clicks. Nothing objective about it.

Tons of films on that list I think are overrated - "There Will Be Blood" - a big meh from me... very overwrought (including D.D. Lewis, especially toward the end) and trolling for supposed 'depth' and critical acclaim. Feh. But I did like Amour and Cache very much - both vastly superior to TWBB (IMO), as was the very good "Let The Right One In" (the original). "Carol" was outright unwatchable - a disaster in my not so humble opinion. And so on.

There will never be full agreement, and it's hard to imagine that there will be even rough agreement. But successful clickbait - here we are, discussing it.
