Battleship... the movie... why?

Why? So that I could scout a bunch of Navy carriers, destroyers, battleships, fast-attack and SEAL delivery vehicles, and climb all over all this kewl Navy gear that one otherwise only sees on the Discovery Channel (well, or has to join the Navy, to play with...)

I think that at some point there will also be something in theaters but from my perspective that's really kind of secondary.

Here's my take: This all is because of the success of "Pirates of the Caribbean", a disney "ride" from Disneyland. By using a name like "Battleship", or "Monopoly", you get immediate brand recognition, something the target audience has fond memories of, without all the hassle of having to please the "fans" and avoid their disappointment, which is a problem for all those comic books, cartoon, TV Series adaptations or even remakes.

From a word like "Batleship", they can come up with a Hunt for Red October like thriller, an all action boat warfare film, or even a comedy. The audience will only be disappointed if, well, the films suck. Talking about "Monopoly", it can end up being of the calibre of a "Wall Street" if Ridley Scott is at the Helm. However, they really have to add a Boot, a car, a Horse riding man, a dog and that "needle thing" or I will be pissed!

What? Little millionaire guy builds hotels! Little millionaire guy sells houses! Little millionaire guy wins beauty contests, inherits money, passes go, and goes directly to jail! Then he gets out of jail free using a card, and builds more hotels!

It's the story of America, writ large.

"No narrative content?"

Feh.

without seeing this movie, it's going to suck.

but there were a lot of board game movies in the past, and also board games in movies.

board game movies like:

jumanji
zathura

board games in movies:

one in a james bond movie i think.
reference to battleship in batman forever i think.

so it's not too uncommon, the villain character might have a twisted mind and force the hero for a non friendly game of whatever.

still think this movie is going to be poop.

Well, now that you put it that way Monopoly and The Social Network are kind of the same. A bunch of kids become instant billionaires and then all start fighting each other for the biggest piece of the board.

Except there actually is an interesting story behind the creation of Facebook. Monopoly has no narrative content.

Maybe Monopoly, as a game, has no narrative content. But there most definitely is a very interesting story behind the creation of Monopoly. Check out the book MONOPOLYGATE by Ralph Anspach, inventor of the game Anti-Monopoly.

These are long form infomercials that entertain and sell toys plus the movies make big bucks.

GI Joe sold $400 million in toys in something like 6 months after the movie came out (franchise now), Transformers, I couldn't even tell you but it's a crazy number for toys and we all know the B.O. numbers for that franchise.

Battleship (hasbro)
GI Joe (hasbro)
Transformers (hasbro)
Monopoly (hasbro)
Majic 8 Ball - yes, it's going to be a movie like jumanji (hasbro)

The only thing that has shocked me is that hasbro HASN'T bought a studio like Paramount (a year ago when they had a chance). Look at the toy numbers, GI Joe the toy has sold $5.6 BILLION worth of those little man dolls since it was invented (actually it's the toy that built hasbro). It's just crazy how much toy revenue/Hasbro influences Hollywood.

Well Candy Land actually makes some sort of sense, considering there is a "story" to the game, even if it is basic.
It's already been done... :D
