Battle of the NLEs

Best NLE

Best NLE

In my opinion Adobe Premiere is the best NLE. I have used Vegas a little, FCP quite a bit and AVID somewhat. FCP is a decent program, but Apple's suck and their file structure sucks even more. I would have to say that Adobe Premiere is about the best NLE on the market as far as usability, that's my opinion anyway. Shy away from Mac's as much as you can, they're a HUGE waste of money. Every NLE can be run on a PC except for FCP, and it isn't worth getting a Mac to run FCP.

But they look sooo pretty

Yeah, it'll be nice when OSX runs on PC hardware and we can stop paying the Apple premiums!

I just watched an episode of Real World Austin where they have to create a video and they are delivered an Avid system to use. One of the housemates is a film student and works on it all night long

Ive been watching this seasons Real World also, he is a sorry excuse for an editor (probably why they chose him for the show.)

The woman in charge comes to visit him, finds out he worked all night long and tells him "Someone should be sitting here with you. No one should have to work on THE AVID all night long, all alone." As if it is some form of medieval torture......

That's kind of reidiculous. I find editing on Avid to be fast and intuitive...but I've been using it since 1991.

Its the industry standard for a reason.

Final Cut Pro is making VERY good inroads, though, and in fact I just bought a powerbook with Final Cut just so I wouldn't lose more freelance work. More people are calling and asking if I know it for freelance work.

I never used Avid..so I duno if its good or not. I use Vegas all the time...its pretty easy workflow for me.

I tried FCP in a computerstore...didnt work for me...had to hold that weird key on the keyboard and click the mouse at the same time to get to like options nd stuff.
Adobe Premier....its ok...too many freakin windows to move around and stuff which makes the userface more complicated.

But the thing i like most about Vegas is everything is docked a certain way....like instead of having your transistions, fx and stuff all in diff windows...they're tabbed.
Ive used Pinnacle 8 before....never again will i ever touch that program....horrible.

I might give Avid a try though..sounds interesting.

I've used about everything since the early nineties (and before this on 3/4" machines). I use Vegas now because it's FAST -- I can get a project done more quickly, and get started on the next project.

Just last week a client came in and we edited four versions of a 30-sec TV commercial from scratch in about an hour -- including rendering and burning to DVD (everything was storyboarded, and the narration already recorded, so it was just a matter of putting the pieces together with the right effects, titles, graphics, and CC.)

My new 'puter is the size of a large shoe-box and cost $700 (but built by myself to be fast and stable).

Not to deviate from the thread topic, but now that you mention it, what are the specs on your custom built?
