Battle of the NLEs

Didn't really want to start an argument of NLEs i am just wondering if the amount of posts and views in the NLE forum directly relate to how popular the NLE is. For instance Vegas seems to be leading even final cut in discussion. Being a premiere user myslef, I found the program to be advanced in its options and settings but interface seemed childish looking and uneasy to work with to me. I would actually like to try another NLE than premiere just incase premiere winds up being a dead end in the field but i dont know what NLE has the best chance of surviving. I would normally think avid but i know final cut is creeping up behind it. I have no major issues with have final cut looks i just dont like the feel of it and i especially dont like macs. I guess i am asking is it better to go Avid or Vegas?

I think the post count is a good rough indication of the popularity of NLE's among our members. Why are you so concerned with the popularity of an NLE? Unless you want to work as an editor, you might as well use whatever works best for *you*. Why don't you download the trial versions of Vegas and Avid Express and see what makes sense for you.

I know most high end editors and studios use AVID as the industry standard.
It's not just the NLE but all the hardware and compatibility behind it. But to me it still feels....well....old. Once you have used it for awile it becomes easier to use but to me at 1st it was counterintuitive.
Sony 6.0 is very intuitive. In a day I was flying. It's just that it looks....well....amateurish. Although that is far from the truth. What a wonderful program. It does it all.
Maybe you could get both, show the impressive AVID front end to your editing friends to get nods of approval and then use Vegas when you want to get your work done.
(hey, that's just a lark, I love my AVID, really, I wrote a Vegemite like song for it..."we all enjoy our AVID's for breakfast, lunch and tea.....")

Seriously, I wonder if Sony Pictures editors use AVID or if they have tried or do use VEGAS internally for projects?

Well, you have to factor in that Macs only account for about 2% of the computers in the world, and PCs have about 98% market share. So even if 100% of the Mac users were using Final Cut, and 2% of the PC users were using Vegas, there'd still be more Vegas users than Final Cut users.

With that said, a disproportionate number of DVXUser members use a Mac; I think Jarred said something like 18% of the membership here are Mac-based. I think it's fair to say that the extremely overwhelming majority of those Mac users are using FCP. So that probably gives an indication as to why FCP gives Vegas such a run for its money among the membership here; a solid 18% are on FCP.

Yes, I would agree with this statement. Especially with my recent exploration of other NLE Vegas is really flexible to use.

Aside from my recent frustrated post about Vegas not utilizing the Hardware like it could its great.

Vegas needs a little beefing up but it is probable the main source of fresh blood into the Video production market. Hence why its so poplar in this forum of the leading indie CAM.

Vegas is tapping into the technology muscian or audio producer that is looking to expand their skills.

Vegas birthed me into this business...

I was a audio edit/producer at a local radio station. Vegas was/is the primier audio editing program at the station and it evolded into video.

I got married and hired a pro videographer and decided to learn to video functions to complete my own wedding. Video was suprisingly easy transition and My wedding turned out great, which lead to family frieds asking me to record their weddings which lead to strangers paying which lead to me quiting/moving to part time my day gig.

I am sure that Vegas is cyphoning alot of muscians like me into this video biz.

It is also a serious bang for your buck. The amount of feature that Vegas offers for the price point is amazing.

They just need to step up to the needs of the following that they have created and address/optimize for hardware GPUs., tweak background process (eg 10bit color) and add multicam and other features that talented users are making as scripts/plugins.

If you are using the PC I would highly recommend Vegas.

Eh? 100% of 2% = 2% 2% of 98% < 2%

But I get your point

That is only because a disproportionate number of creatives use Mac. In fact I know no "non-creatives" that do, Apple is heavily biased towards creative types. Here in the UK, no one seems to use Vegas. Avid leads the industry, but people seem to be changing to FCP everyday.

That tripe gets SO old.

Tripe???

I am not saying it is better, just that Apple aims their products at creatives. I think you mis-read my post. I don't know anyone who uses a Mac this isn't in the creative industries. If I wasn't I would use PCs.

I mean that the 2% example is in the computer world as a whole. In creative industries, that percentage is far higher. You can't think that is tripe!?

Perhaps I did misread you. I grant you that the Mac has a higher percentage of usership in creative media than it does in the computing world as a whole.

It just sounded like the actual tripe that does come from Mac types all the time . . . you know, "if you use a Mac, you must be a creative person! If you want to be creative, you have to use a Mac!" Neither has any basis in reality; it's just poster boy talk.

So, sorry for misreading . . .

That's cool... My original post wasn't all that clear. :)

I got started on Vegas. I had always been really into entertainment media, and one day I started goofing around with video. Well, I realized the power that Vegas had so I started taking it a little more seriously. I said to myself "Wow! You can really DO something with this software!" Its what led me to getting a DVX.

You really just have to use what feels right for you. They all do great things, have some weak spots, and some really frustrating aspects to them! The bottom line is, what NLE is right for Joe may not be a match for you. May be its the feel, the interface, etc. but whatever it is, you should try as many as you can before settling on any one. I had versions of Premiere, Avid, and Vegas to tinker with before I found which one I synched best with.

Happy editing!

good feedback, i am looking to possibly becoming an editor so i wanted to know what is the most commonly used software in the field so i can be wanted by employers.

If you want other people to employ you, it is still a good idea to know Avid. IME it is the most common professional NLE. If you can get fluent in FCP and Vegas (and Premiere) too you'll be in a good position!

Start with one that feels right to you. Learn it, master it. Then pick up another. If you know one really well, a lot of times its a question of figuring out how to do the same thing in another program. You'll start to learn the strengths and weaknesses of all and then know which is good for whick project.

AVID is definitely at the foreground of pros, but I wouldn't start with it personally. I didn't find it very user friendly and without basic editing knowledge down it can be a daunting program. I know a lot of pros use it, but I still don't like it. LOL.

Let us know what you decide to start with/use. There may be a book or two I can recommend looking at.

Happy Editing!

I didnt mean to imply that i have not edited at all, i pretty much know premiere inside out 6.5 and pro 1.5 and have been working with after effects for more than 5 years now. I just haven't actually been employed in the field since i am still in college, But ihave been editing shorts and especially events using premiere for a while now. I think my next choice will be avid but i will probably study vegas at the same time. The video dept of my school has FCP and i have used it for about a year and a half but its just annoying to work with IMO.

Vegas is probably the only NLE that can work on anything. Avid is just too quirky. I have both, and I hate how Vegas looks, but it works and is reliable.

To be get an Editing Job you should get to know The Avid. It is daunting though. I just watched an episode of Real World Austin where they have to create a video and they are delivered an Avid system to use. One of the housemates is a film student and works on it all night long. The woman in charge comes to visit him, finds out he worked all night long and tells him "Someone should be sitting here with you. No one should have to work on THE AVID all night long, all alone." As if it is some form of medieval torture......
