Battery for AF-100 and Nanoflash.

Absolutely. The only thing you need is a cable to power the NF (Hirose plug). We already shipped a few. The battery will power both AF100 and NF for about 1 hour 40 min.

Dear Friends,

I have been working with www.nanoFlash.net.

They have in-stock the Swit 7.2 Volt battery which can power the AF100 and nanoFlash.

They have also built custom power cables that go from this Swit battery to the nanoFlash.

Thus, the AF100 and nanoFlash can be easily powered by this battery which makes powering both easy.

The battery is $99.95 and the cable is $54.95. www.nanoFlash.net should have these on their website later today.

The Swit battery does not need any specific charger (is it what you are asking?) Panasonic OEM, our charger (any model configured for the AF100 battery) will work.

Lots of Nano people here, but would this also power the KiPro Mini? Also can someone reply in my thread in the AF100 section about how to mount a KiPro to the back of my rails setup PROPERLY? I'm sure similar principles apply for the Nano...

The Ki Pro Mini requires 12v of power, so no, powering a Ki Pro is not nearly so easy a solution. Part of the reason I prefer the Nano over the Ki Pro is the powering issue.

I liked the concept of the AJA, but when it came to integrating it, it just seemed a lot more expensive and more hassle. The Nano takes any voltage from 6 to 19.5 volts. The Ki Pro Mini requires 12 volts. And, the Nano only draws 6 watts, the Ki Pro requires 15 to 18 watts. The power consumption difference is huge. 6 watts at 6 volts, in terms of battery requirements, would mean that you'd need a 5x more powerful battery for the Ki Pro Mini. The AJA just requires bigger, heavier, more powerful batteries, period. And where the Nano could be easily powered by a little cable to the on-camera battery (like the Swit), the Ki Pro Mini is going to require something like an Anton Bauer or IDX 14.4v battery system with a power tap. And that's an extra 2 pounds on your rig, plus the mounting plate, plus needing an Anton-Bauer or IDX charger. So you'll end up spending an extra thousand bucks on all that stuff, which negates the price advantage that the Ki Pro Mini had in the first place, and then you're having to deal with two to three pounds of extra equipment, and now you have to keep track of the state of charge of two different batteries, and when you travel you have to bring both battery systems and both chargers, and then you will need to use more expensive compactflash cards because the Ki Pro Mini's qualified cards are more expensive than what the Nano can use at its variable bitrates...

All to get 10-bit recording, which the AF100 can't take advantage of anyway.

I really wanted to like the Ki Pro Mini, but any way I can slice it, the Nano just made a lot more sense. I think it integrates better with the AF100, far better, because of the Swit battery and the simultaneous powering and Olof's ingenious Nano bracket. It can be a totally integrated, lightweight, handheld package.

If you already have Anton Bauers and you're always going to use your AF100 on rails, then the Ki Pro Mini might make just as much sense. But if you're starting from scratch and/or you want to retain the option of a stripped-down handheld configuration, I just think the Nano makes a lot better "fit" with the AF100.

(If you're talking about a different camera, specifically one that already uses Anton Bauers like an HPX500 or VariCam, then I could make a much more compelling argument for the Ki Pro Mini, since you could power it off the PowerTap and in the context of the larger camera body, mounting the Ki Pro Mini would be largely a nonissue). But for 7.2v cameras like the AF100 or EX1, I think the Nano is the better design and fits better with those types of cameras. (although the EX1 could benefit from the 10-bit of the Ki Pro Mini).

I'm sure someone who's used it will weigh in, but no, the same principles don't apply with the Nano, because with the Nano you either stick it on top with the shoe mount (which I despise) or you use Olof's excellent Nano bracket, which is what I bought and which is a really ideal mounting system. It doesn't require rails, it's easy to strip down to being no size at all, and because you don't need an additional battery you don't need to have additional mounting hardware to accomodate it all.

For the Ki Pro Mini, I think you're probably just going to have to look for a rails-mounted Anton Bauer battery plate, and then attach the Ki Pro Mini to that, but ... I haven't really explored it past my initial evaluation (as outlined in the post above) which made my decision for me so I didn't pursue researching further mounting options.

Perhaps Olof can be talked into making an AF100/Ki Pro Mini mounting bracket, but that would still leave you with the issue of mounting a battery.

You pull it off, mount the bracket, then put the side handle back on. It stays permanently on, and you can remove the nano bracket by a couple of thumbscrews to strip it down to a minimal size, or reattach the bracket. It's really a clever design. The main mounting point is a "shim" that sits underneath the side handle, which then comes out to a mounting point where you put the Nano bracket, or the shoulder mount, or whatever else he designs for it.

So you don't lose anything (well, the one thing you lose is the inside shoe mount under the side handle; the bracket covers that up).

Just a quick note, the first version of the cable had a tight fit due to its straight battery plug; we just tested a new right angle plug, which worked out great. If somebody wants to exchange one that we shipped recently, please contact us, will be happy to do it.

Hello ADolgin,
I received my Thursday from Dan Keaton and it works like a charm. I am in the process of doing a battery duration test now. Great cable solution, great price.

Glad it is working out for you. You should be getting almost 2 hours out of these batteries while powering both the camera and NF.
Regards
