Battery Charging problem

Hi,

I'm a newbie here. This is a wonderful forum, but as much as I've looked I can't find aan answer to my specific problem.

I recently aqquired a used DVX100A which came with three batteries, each of which lasts very little time at all before the charge goes. I put this down to the fact they were probably old and were simply not holding their charge, so bought a new battery.

I charged it up for several hours before using it (as it states in the manual).
Lo and behold the brand new battery lasts no longer than theothers! About twenty minutes, if I'm lucky, before it dies.

The manual also states you shouldn't leave the battery on the camera when not in use, and I have to admit I did this with the new battery (just once). Could this be the problem?

Or could there be something fundamentally wrong with the camera that is causing it to wear down the batteries superfast?

Sorry if this seems a really stupid question, but I'm getting desperate now and don't care what anyone thinks of me.

If anyone could help I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

Leaving a battery on the camera (camera is off) will not have any appreciable effect on the battery as the camera uses minimal amount of power when off.
The is no chance a defective camera can drain a battery in 20 minutes as the energy would have to go somewhere (where?) making your camera as hot as a 100w light bulb. I think you would notice your camera melting :-)
So it leaves you with a bad charger, or user error. How do you charge them? Is the camera unplugged from the adapter while charging?

Thanks Alex. It's a relief to know it isn't the camera. Yes camera unplugged.
Using a brand new EC-550 Ultra Fast Charger.

Just did a test - leaving camera on (not recording) with a fully charged battery ( also brand new ) and it lasted 50 mins.

I looked at the charger - it claims to automatically figure out your battery voltage and charge the battery in 30 minutes. Something tells me that this is not a very credible piece. If you need more help, send your batteries here, we will test them and return to you with the report.

Alex,

I suspect you're right about the charger. I'm based in the Uk so it probably wouldn't be economical to send batteries to US. but thanks anyway.

However, I was looking at your site. Do you deliver outside US? It wasn't clear.

Graham.
