Batman Begins (saw it)

I caught a sneak screener tonight -- it's a fairly mediocre movie, IMO.

There are some really cool scenes, and some nice touches, but overall, I don't see the franchise relaunch WB is hoping for. Spiderman set the bar way up there and this movie falls short.

Here are my major gripes (SPOILERS):

-- Bale is a really good Bruce, but he is a lame Batman -- his voice needs to drop an octave or two, not just sound like he's whispering.

-- Wayne Manor was part of the Underground Railroad? This is such a nitpick, since it's one line in the movie, but it completely took me out of the film. I know Gotham is fictional, but I never got the feeling it was in the south. This seems like a nice touch for an Elseworlds comic, but it was a little out of place.

Actually, the Underground Railroad, ran from the south, but most of it's prominent "stops" were in northern cities. I've been in U.R. locations in Detroit MI and Corruna MI. Most northern cities in the east with easy access to Canada have a UR history.

Not that that has anything to do with Batman. I'll probably go see it, but not all that thrilled about it.

THe UR ran all the way to Canada. Still, it seems like a bit of unnecessary PC revisionist history of the mythos.

My expectations are pretty low for this. Although, can it be worse than the one with Arnold? My hope is that they actually focus on Batman, instead of the villains.

So i didn't read your posts as I saw the word Spoiler in it. Thus I've come right down hear to reply.

obviously everyone has there own opinions, and something I think may suck another may love, so to each his own.

At around the same time I saw your thread I came across this at Ain't it Cool News:

http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=20395

also, Moriarty, the guy who runs the site thought the movie was excellent.

I'll read your thread after I see the movie, and give you my thoughts as to whether i agree or not with what you had to say. Until then, it's still the best looking film of the summer imho!!

Harry Knowles runs Aint It Cool. His book of the same name is pretty good. Moriarity is one of his most prolific informants.

Luckily (for me) your opinion on the film appears to be in the minority. I am a HUGE Bats fan, I can't wait for this! Jealous you got to see it so early!

Yeah, I am by no means a history professor, but I have read a ton of comics :) I'll check out some of the professional reviewers.

Warner Bros. screened the movie for us, and an exec speaking before the film mentioned "Spiderman setting the bar" and "relaunch the franchise," so I used those as my criteria.

This was a decent movie, but by no means a classic or a blockbuster.

The storyline of the Wayne Manor being a safe house for the underground railroad (in the North) was used in the Batman Comics. Goyer or Nolan really did their research.

Also, the wide city shot from a plane, is almost identical to the maps of Gotham given out with certain books, which you can find online.

I'm impressed, these guys did their homework.

For all you real fanboys, DC comics is unveling their new logo at the beginning of the movie. The DC credit sequence is kind of a Marvel rip-off tho.

I've seen the DC logo, it is kinda rip.

I can't wait for this, every trailer and even the ten minutes of footage I've seen point it to cool. Now, I read the script and its good but not great. A really good director could make it awesome.

i guess you gotta be a real batman fan to appreciate the movie. if everybody out there says it's no good, i will definately still go watch, and also get the ps2 game.

damn, time is going too slow, i can't wait.............movie?.......or the game?.......which to do first?

movie is excellent, your kidding your self gabe with your analysis. "Franchise relaunch" and comparing it to spiderman(movie) your out of your mind. go back and watch the 1st batman then tell me if you would take your 8 year old kid to see it. Batman (in the movies) always appealed to a mature audience, WB wasn’t looking to do a kiddie "franchise relaunch" .

Original batman
120 episodes

(appeals to kids)
Batman Animated series
85 episodes
Batman: Gotham Knights
Batman Beyond

spiderman animated series
65 episodes

batman and spiderman are both superhero's but dude get a grip on the directions movies. if your going to be a film critic go do your research. and bring in some kind of comparison besides .... HEY ITS BATMAN and hey ITS SPIDERMAN they both end with MAN so they should be THE SAME type of movie.

I'm not a professional film critic, but I did study English in college, and I can't understand what you wrote. As far as you quoting me, I was quoting a WB exec, so you can beat it.

Same director/camp that shot this shot Superman as well.. so it will be interesting how the 2 work out.

I love the AICN review, but I will say that the part that bothers me is that BB is supposed to have a similar look and feel (action sequences) to The Bourne Supremacy, by that I mean very dark and rigid film editing when it comes to the action. It gives me the impression that Nolan might not know how to shoot action--I'll wait and see.
