Basketball DVX good times.

Last weekend my buddy hooked us up with a jib for a day and I figured I'd shoot him playing hoops in my backyard in Toronto. I've been reading DVX user chronically for 2 years (since when i was trying to decide to buy one or not) and i reckon it was time to post.

Incase anyone is interested:

24PA, no colour correction, all done in camera (warmed up and low master ped)

This place kicks all sorts of Ass, thanks!

yo dude,

good little video there. footage looked great. great look, great composition. first shot where we move in is the best. i can't believe this is raw footage. Your friend is also a freaking awesome basketball player.

Yeah that opening shot is really great, I must have a jib now. What kind was it?

The other shots I assume were tripod. Any handheld or steadicam devices used?

I really liked it.

No steady cam, mostly on jib even for shots that weren't moving much, just held the jib right up by the head, and framed/moved it subtly. Some hand held, and tripod for the rack zoom stuff.

I think that jib would be a fortune to buy. I think it was called the Mirkat jib. My buddy was able to hook it up for the 3 day weekend by buying the guy in charge a bottle tequila. I wish all rental places worked on that kind of barter system.

I like when the dude misses a shot and then he's like "damn it" and jumps in for a dunk.
Good stuff!

Looks really good. You did a good job making it fast paced and interesting. I would love to see more of your stuff

..envigorating.. good work. seemed like the opening for something .. just missing credits on the screen. i liked this.

Shutter Speed

Shutter Speed

Hey guys, thanks for the kind words again!

Re: shutter speed, ya it was cranked up to 250 or 500 can't remember which. Just helped it feel a little more exciting and staccato.

it's not dvx, but i directed an animated music video that has a trailer online (it's currently unreleased) at www.calbrunker.com if anyone is interested.

I'm not a huge fan of animation but that doesn't alter the fact that it looked great. Loved the b-ball video. Great editing and great camera work. I'm sure you're friend loved seeing himself pimped in a tight video!

callan: LOVE the animated trailer! Very nice. Reminds a lot of Don Bluth's work. Keep us updated as to when we can view the whole thing.

Callan,
Had to get a word in here. That video was crazy dude. Color was awesome; hi shutter speed definitely added something. All around, awesome video.

Looked good...however I wanted to see more use of the crane! A lot of the shots look like they were handheld (which didnt look bad)I was expecting to see some "SWEEPS" with the crane or a maybe a shot from behind the basketball basket shooting through the glass of the ball going in. Perhaps you could have done a low angle sweep for the opening shot of the camera close to the ground sweeping across the court to a macro shot of the hands grabbing the ball. Nice cuts to the music though. What shutter speed were you shooting on?

The choice for rock music was cool too. As much as I love hip hop, the video wouldn't have been as interesting, as I would have expected hip hop music.

Nice work Callan. Did you storyboard the basketball piece? I enjoy shooting "tests" on the fly, and then creating a story in editing.

The animated teaser is the perfect length.

Re: storyboarding. Ya. I did up a bunch of little ideas leading up to it. I storyboard for a living, so I can't help myself. I like boarding so that you have the confidence to throw it all out if you find something better on location.
