Basic resolution and frame rate questions

1.) Why does 1080p video have different frame rate options than 720p? Is there some logic behind this?

2.) Why would you shoot at 720p if you can shoot at 1080p to get the highest resolution and than you can later downconvert in post to 720p? Are there advantages besides saving file size to shooting in 720p?

Thanks!

1. Because there are more pixels in 1080p image than in 720p, thus CPU cannot compress as many frames per second.
2. Because it gives double the temporal (time) resolution for only 30% loss in pixel area.

1. So are you saying that current CPU technology cannot compress as many frames per second at 1080p? If this is correct, than at some point in the future, we will be able to with faster computers?
2. Are you saying that 720P video has double the "temporal (time) resolution" than 1080P video?

Thanks.

It's data rate. The reason most (affordable) cameras don't shoot 1080P 60fps is that the rate of data that would have to be processed by the cameras CPU is too much and overwhelms it.
