Basic Questions

I am going to be using a DVX-100B tomorrow to shoot a simple presentation that will be presented from someone speaking into a mic and am hoping someone can answer the following:

1.) Are the only options for frame rates 30 or 24p on the DVX?
2.) How is the quality of the on-board mic? Is it good enough to pick up audio being emitted from speakers in a room. The speakers are installed in the ceiling, so I can not mic them. The presenter will be using a wireless mic, and I do not think I will be able to mic him.
3.) How can I adjust the volume of the on-board mic?

Thanks for any info!

Hi,

Im just a novice but:

a) The built in mic is ok at close distances but an external mic/xlr is superior
b) it depends if you want the sound of the person's actual voice or you are happy to record the sound of the speakers in the room - if you are not too far back from the person you could use a shot gun mic with an extension cable - or you could try another lapel mic.
c) it depends though - maybe someone else has a better solution - mabye the inbuilt mic sounds ok for your purpose

Mark,

1) DVX framerates are 24P/24PA/30P/60i. I would recommend 30P for your application.
2) If possible, get a feed from the microphone. This can be through a mixer or press-pool. Record this to one of the two channels. Inserting to Ch2 allows you to instantly record to both Ch1 and Ch2 by selecting Ch2 for both inputs. You can use the on-board to capture room tone, but turn the ALC off in the menus for this purpose.
3) Selecting INT for either Ch1 or Ch2 assigns those channels to the on-board microphone. You can ride the volume at the pots.

1. What is the difference between 30P and 60i? Aren't they both based on 30fps?
2. I am still fairly new to this, if I use your suggestions and use the on-board mic to record room tone, and later capture the video into Final Cut Pro, will this mean that I will have the 2 channels of audio of the person speaking and another channel of audio of just room tone that can be separated and deleted?

Thanks guys!!!!

It all resides in NTSC 60i, but the image is being captured progressively. In 60i, the image is no longer captured progressively.

No, the on-board would also get the ambient version of the same dialogue or whatever else is happening as you roll tape. However, it adds a back-up to any single-system room tone you record through the DVX. Your boom or wireless would go to the assigned channel only.
