Basic questions about how 720p footage is displayed?

I'm working with 1280 x 720 footage and am noticing that sometimes I have black bars at the top and bottom of my Sequence, and other times, I do not.

1.) What determines when these bars are displayed?

2.) What happens with 720p video when displayed on a 1080 display? Does it stretch to fit? How does it scale?

Thanks.

1. Remember that, depending on the device your footage is captured on and its format, the pixels might not be square. HVX DVCPRO HD footage for example is 960×720 and must be stretched to fit. Check your sequence settings and see what you are editing in and correct for it there, or if you are mixing footage adjust the aspect ratio for those clips.

2. It will stretch to fit on every TV and device I'm familiar with. The exact method of scaling is dependent of the device. I wouldn't worry about it, a lot of HD content is 720p and most people can't tell the difference.

Arrrgggghhhh... too many variables! ;)
Yo! Please throw down needed details, in order to get a better answer.
1. Camera you used
2. Output format and or transcoding process
3. Editing software being used.
4. Sequence settings being used in the project. (i.e. right click and screen shot settings from your sequence)

Sorry, for maybe sounding a little stern... just SO MANY people ask questions and there is NO context to work from. Like calling a mechanic and saying my car wont start... how do i fix it? Just too many variables to even begin.

Also a screenshot of the issue would help. But yeah- that's conforming going on where the sequence and media resolutions don't match up- or are being interpreted differently.
