Hey guys I got a request to supply a finished Video Specs:

1080i60 (59.94i) 29.97 fps - Drop Frame time-code 1920x1080

I know this is
rudimentury but it is confusing me as to how to shoot it. 30p or 60p, and then convert it in FCPX to interlaced? or shoot it interlaced at 60p or 60i and put it on a 30p timeline. I am shooting a sony Fs5.
Thanks and sorry for the probably dumb question.

Well, the delivery specs call for 60i, so shoot and edit in 60i. As David suggests, if you're wanting a different look, you might have cause to shoot at a different frame rate, but that would be the ONLY reason not to shoot and edit to the delivery spec. Well, that, or if your camera cannot shoot at 60i.

And note that they want drop frame TC. You need to make sure that your camera is set to record drop frame if it can, and you need to make sure your FCP project is set up for drop frame.

Looks like they are really wanting it in 29.97 PsF which is slightly different from real 60i. PsF is progressive segmented frame, there is a good article on wikipedia so I won't type it all out here. But the big difference between PsF and true interlaced is the time difference between the information in the 2 fields. I'd check on exactly what they need one more time to make sure you are sending the right thing.

Well 1080i 59.94 is a 29.97 frame rate. 29.97psf would be the progressive equivalent. A time coherent progressive frame imbedded in sequential fields at 59.94. That would match broadcast 1080i requirements.

For what it's worth, almost everything I deliver is broadcast TV commercials in the USA at 29.97, but I almost never shoot at that frame rate. 99% of the time I shoot at 23.976 and then convert the finished commercial to 29.97 in After Effects.
