basic question: shooting indoors vs. outdoors

i'll be shooting with the dvx100a for the first time tomorrow (i normally use the xl2) and i have some very basic questions...one of which is,

i know that on the xl2 there is just a dial on the side of the camera body that you can set to color balance -- you set it to daylight or tungsten, then press white balance, and you're good to go. is this similar to the dvx100a?

your help in greatly appreciated -- thanks!

Yes, there is a 3-position white balance switch on the left side of the camera ( A, B, and Preset). Switch it to preset and then the white balance button at the front of the camera will toggle between tungsten and daylight.

And of course, when the color balance switch is on "A" or "B" the same button at the front of the camera will set white balance rather than toggle as it does when the WB switch is on "Preset"

okay...so say I set the 3-position switch on the side to "preset", then toggle the white balance button at the front of the camera to "tungsten", for instance. now i'm color-balanced for interior lighting.

so now that I've set my color balance, how do i white balance? i.e. i point the camera at a white card and hit what, exactly?

huge help -- thanks again.

...oh -- and also, if you have any tips on laying time code while recording, please do tell. (i.e. so that the timecde will remain consistent throughout the tape, while starting and stopping, powering on and off, etc.)

Are you asking about white balance or color temp?

Color temp controls are in the Scene File menu. To white balance, have the switch in either A or B or and hold down the white balance button on the front of the camera.

At standard settings, timecode will be recorded consistently throughout the tape as long as you don't have any breaks. To be sure you prevent breaks, you can use the Rec Check button. But it's usually not an issue unless you're doing a lot of viewing of the tape while shooting. If you just record and don't view, you shouldn't have any issues starting and stopping, powering down, etc..
