Basic issue: the look of 24p?

Yes, but you put it much more elegantly than I ever could :)
LOL

OK! So we all know editing 24pA footage on a 24p timeline will look amazing on a DVD, I have a set of rather ignorant questions to ask.

It is clear that most DVD players are switchable progressive/interlaced. As we all know, when switching to interlaced, 24p DVDs are pulled-down to be viewed on interlaced TVs. If the 16x9 flag is set on the DVD, the image is "resized" for widescreen viewing on 4x3 TVs. And when in progressive mode, 24p DVDs shine on progressive scan TVs.

But aren't all progressive scan displays usually supposed to be 16x9? So if you shoot 4x3 24p with a DVX, set the flag to 4x3, will the footage be pillar-boxed on 16x9 progressive displays?

Depends on the player. My player has a setting which will pillarbox 4:3 material. Not all do.

A 16:9 TV should have a setting which will display it correctly.

I think this is an incredibly valuable thread for anyone unfamiliar with this world; as was I. Is there some way I--or anyone--can archive it for future reference? Ya know for that project a year or so down the line when find yourself sitting there staring at the monitor thinking "...wuh???"
