Baseball Blockbuster

disjecta

Lucky Duck
My son is in Little League and I was away for a lot of his games so didn't really have enough footage to do anything in terms of a little documentary.

Some other guy was shooting some video for the team anyway. I decided to go another route with the limited footage I had, I decided to make a fake blockbuster movie opening with all the kids listed as stars.

I haven't shown it to them yet and there are a lot of repetitive shots in here in terms of angle, etc., but it's just for a bunch of kids and I think they'll get a kick out of it.

It hasn't been finalized regarding color correction and there is one more game which I plan to shoot and maybe replace some shots but this is really not meant to be taken too seriously.

Enjoy:

Very very impressive. I was watching that movie where the kid becomes a pitcher for the Chicago Cubs the other day, and this is so much better than that. You may have been asked this before, but I ask again only because you employ it so well: where do you find your music?

Wow. I agree... amazing work.

I notice in a few pitching shots, there appears to be two cameras. Did you just take two different shots that you had taken at different times and edit them together to seem like one particular moment in time, or did you actually have someone else shooting?

I noticed the "leg dolly" shot! It looks even better when put into a larger piece.

You have a great eye, even when I assume you don't have much time to decide how you want to set the camera. When you're shooting something like a sports event, you can't control the position of people. Yet you seem to be able to find a good looking frame in the short time you have, and go with that.

What kind of color correction do you plan to do? Right now I think it looks great. Once again it seems a bit de-saturated, which to me looks more like 35mm film than the default colors of the DVX100A.

Remind me again... you used a wide angle lens when you shot this?

BTW... Philly represent!!! (where I'm from)

Lolx, that'd be funny if the kids sat down to watch it and were like "I like the use of handheld here, it really conveys the energy we experience on the film. Oh great exposure on that shot, was that done in post or in-camera?"

Your face :

Anyways, very good shots, and the titles don't seem Premiere-ish for once. The text and it's texture work well, it seems very baseball-skin-ish. The only weak shot I think you have is the rear of the kid running to base, that's the only not-as-filmish-looking-one. Might just be what was in front of camera, not as exciting as a sideangle of a fence, etc.

And that last shot of the kids doing the high-five line, it's very...I don't know...3 Ninjas, but in a good way. I dig.

hey man, don't knock 3 ninjas.......I worshipped that movie.

But Disjecta, thats fantastic stuff again. You're the top of the food chain on these boards and I appreciate your willingness to help us little guys out and show us what the DVX is capable of.

Thanks everyone.

MagnumDB - The multiple angles of the same moment shots are two different moments in time edited together to make it look like one. There was only one camera operator present (that would be me).

The color correction I plan on doing is very subtle. I'm not going to change the look, just make some of the colors a little more consistent from shot to shot.

I used the Century Optics Teleconverter 1.6x for a lot of the close ups to get that more filmic narrow depth of field.

FindingMattch - I laughed out loud at your comment regarding the kids making technical comments about the shots :)

No no, 3 Ninjas is ultimate, I've even seen the unedited version [the kids lose the basketball game, but beat up the bullies at the end,] I was just worried some users might think I meant it in a bad way.

dis - good

Disjecta, Awsome work just like always. I don't see that you need that much cc work. I thought everything looked really nice. Oh and I loved your dolly shot.

The camera moves are very natural, catching every single "actor" state of mind...
...as if the camera was invisible...
...I like it very much, very much.

great clip but I must be going mental because for once I noticed crazy interlacing throughout the whole thing, go fig *shrug*

Yes, all DVX100A and 24pa but the Web file is kinda screwy right now. The interlacing artifacts you are seeing are not part of the original.

awesome work disjecta! brings back memories of my baseball days

love the aspect ratio... where did that post you did on how to convert the footage to that aspect ratio, go?
