The Sony PMW-EX1 is a wonderful piece of professional video equipment. For events and ENG (electronic news gathering) the EX1 is in a class of its own. With its half inch sensor, three chip design, solid state recording and portable configuration its one of the tops in the world. It has a few minor issues and this base-plate is a must have for EX1 owners because it resolves several of those issues.
One problem with EX camcorders is that the tripod screw mount is a little plastic plate on the bottom of the camcorder. During the active and on the go shooting style of events and ENG accidents and bumps are bound to happen. When accidents happen the mounting plate can snap off allowing your camera to drop to the concrete.
Another problem is, there aren't enough places to hang two wireless receivers and a video recorder. (Discovery Channel and BBS require a data rate with a minimum of 50Mbps. You need a recorder through SDI-HD to meet that requirement, and you certainly don't want someone in a crowd to trip over speaker wires. You need this stuff.)
Finally, the EX1 doesn't balance well and is awkward for hand held work. The extra holes in the bottom of the base-plate give you a larger range for front and back adjustments on tripods and Steadicams, while the mounting locations on the 'wing' shift the weight to the right and back so your wrist isn't torqued to the side while doing hand held.
The base plate does several things:
Starting at $45 with no reserve.

The base plate does several things:
- It's stronger and spreads the stress over a larger area by uses more screws (without drilling holes in the camera). This makes it safer and more secure on a tripod, steadicam, etc.
- It provides a wing with two cold shoes for mounting more accessories such as the Nanoflash and a wireless mic in a location that is accessible but out of the way.
- It distributes the weight and avoids torque so that your wrist isn't being pulled to the side for hand held. The camera actually feels lighter and you have less fatigue.
- The camera balances better on tripods and Steadicams.
