Base frame rate for slow motion on FS700

Can someone clarify the best base frame rate to shoot 240fps on the FS700? I've tried 24p and 60p, but 60p leads to shortened clips and slower frame rates when shooting 240fps. I'm missing the math/logic behind which "base" frame rate to choose in the slo-mo mode before shooting. Brain freeze I guess...

Thanks for any clarification on this.

Basically, it's what frame rate you want it to be.

For example, most films are shot at 24fps, so for that, you should set the base frame rate to be 24fps on 240fps slow motion.

I just DP'd a spot for the Discovery channel, and they use 30fps, so for them, I set the base frame rate to be 30fps.

For Disney who I am DP'ing a spot tomorrow, they usually request 24fps, so the base will be 24fps on all frame rates (24, 60, 120 and 240 Fps). Hope that makes sense.

I would AVOID 60p as the base because most clients and TV work is done in 24 or 30 fps.

Also, make SURE to set the quality to FX. Avoid PS as that has a lower Mega Bits per Second so the image quality is worse. FX is the highest bit rate.

Thanks! I'm sticking with 24p FX. I've reviewed some test shots which look great at that setting.

sorry gene, but shooting PS gives you a higher Bitrate... see here:

Recording Frame rate
HD PS (28Mbps) 1920 x 1080/60p, 50p
FX (24Mbps) 1920 x 1080/60i, 50i, 30p, 25p, 24p 1280 x 720 /60p, 50p
FH (17Mbps) 1920 x 1080/60i, 50i, 30p, 25p, 24p 1280 x 720 /60p, 50p
HQ (9Mbps) 1440 x 1080/60i, 50i
LP (5Mbps) 1440 x 1080/60i, 50i

you can shoot 240fps to a 60p clip, but will have to slow down the 60p to 24p again if you have a 24p timeline, means slowing the clip down by 40% to get the 240fps again...

But technically the extra 3Mbps on "PS" are spread across an extra 30+ frames (60p instead of 24p/25p/30p), correct? Because it's megabits per second. Wouldn't that mean, overall, that each frame has more compression?

jshbckr is correct. If you look at clips of equal time, The FX file size is much larger and has much less macro blocking. It way higher quality.

i didn't think of that fact, you are right guys! sorry, my bad - i just learned something new about my camera :)

when i do sports stuff, i mostly shoot 60p PS and 240fps to 24p FX, i never looked that deep in the quality differences of PS and FX, but it should be almost half the bitrate per frame!

i always edit 60p in a 24p timeline, slow down the 60p for slowmo if needed...
