Barry out of these cameras which one do you like the best?

Hvx 200
Sony Z1
Jvc hd100
Cannon XLH1

what camera is the best all around?

If you search around, you will see he said that there is different camera for different needs.

But his personal favorite is the HVX200 (in the under 10k$ range)
He like the Vericam better ;)

I personally was sold to Canon. I have never tryed it but I look good. I also own a Canon 20D SLR camera and love it. The sensor and lens are great, so I guessed Canon would be the best for video also.

But the HDV recording format is pretty disapointing. There is a SDI-HD output but any tape or card to record that stream is expensive.

Also one thing people did not mention offen is that this camera run LINUX !!! It a complete computer with PCMCIA port. Having a camera that run such a versatile OS show alot of potential. Sadly Panasonic wont realise my dream from themself. If the DVCPRO HD compression is made in software, that would really rock, because this could allow from the HVX200 uncompress recording for devices. A SDI-HD PCMCIA card ? Hey it could be possible. Depending how the DV Deck work, one could actually hack and do HDV recording (if the processor is fast ennuf) or build a PCMCIA mpeg2 compressor and send that to the DV as HDV.

Now you might think of me as delusional, but once you are dealing with a real PC, and with interface that allow versatile high transfer rate, everything is possible.

I can only hope Panasonic Open up to the idea, but I got a feeling they wont :(

Maybe the CinePorter crew will be interested, or the people making the DVX, andromeda.

Posibilities are limitless when going down that road.

Software DVCPRO HD in HVX???

Good joke ;-)

Why is that ? Why wouldnt it be software like what your NLE is using ?

People need to understand that the camera have a OS in behind. So the LCD are actual 'monitor', and the buttons on them a 'keyboard'. Depending of what you press, the camera does something. Now DVCPRO HD was mention to be less processor intensive, so they could very well made a software DVCPRO HD encoder in software that write data to a P2 / PCMCIA card. The tape is like a tape backup device, the OS record and read 0/1 to it at a rate of 25mbits to the tape.

But it could be dedicated chip that does the compression, so the input is sent to the chip, then the chip return the DVCPRO HD to the OS and then is written to the P2.

I wish Panasonic open it heart to the Linux GPL world and give the specs, and work with everyone to bring new feature to the camera. Maybe put a WIFI card into the camera, and you can remotly control all the aspect of the camera, zoom, focus, colors... everything.

We wont know until Panasonic tell us, or we dig into the camera. But I guess there wont be ennuf people willing to risk their camera to hack it. Except the people who made Andromeda, who seem to not be afraid to take it appart.

I can't wait to see Panasonic to comply with the GPL and publish the source
on their site :
https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/mvp_e/user/gpl_e.htm

Dont beleive me it run linux ? start by looking at page 4 where it talk about the GPL. Now GPL != to linux, but google the internet to find more about it.

I think the HVX200 is like a word processor in a room full of typewriters. But for full reasons why, I answered this question in the "4 cam comparison -- initial report" thread.

What a naive question, my goodness...

...excellent metaphor, Barry.

Unfortunately, I'd like to follow your baby...if you will get solve my doubts, I'd like to have this promess accomplish and to shoot with 4 uncompressed audio channels, DVCPRO-HD@100 megabits -- similar than HDCAM but handy...well, it would be a dream came true...

...after that thread's joke, would it be possible to test that settings, my friend?

Mochouinard: It is less processor intensive, but with common Pentium 4 or AMD or Mac processors.
HVX's newly developed digital signal processor 14-bit A/D conversion and 19-bit inner processing.

Well I'm shocked - I never would have guessed that answer in a million years!

BTW until you can actually finish a film in the HVX, it's still a typewriter.

Yeah, my preference for the HVX is pretty well-known!

Why can't you finish a film with the HVX?

And Emanuel, I'm not sure what you're asking for.

Sorry my english, Barry. I want to mean...those settings :)

[ LINK to these ones that you posted before ]

And for example, it would be interesting to compare what you are saying in this excellent post here. We are far away as you well know. And if there are a lot of american future HVX users that are waiting for a HVX hands-on chance, you can figure when we will have this opportunity here@europe...

...so, you are our eyes and our hands, too.

Thanks in advance!

I think so, I'm not sure... I can check...thanks!

However, what I'd like to see it would be some footage, similar than the test pics available that I linked. With REAL subjects it will be easier to me - I'm not techie, you know! - to evaluate better.

Thanks in advance for your care Barry!

Barry,

Would you please post a hyperlink to the exact page containing your answer to that question, if it isn't too much trouble?

Thanks,

D~C
