barry - now that you have a production model...

can you tell us if there where any major tweaks done? has the image improved? noise issues? etc...

any thoughts would be great.

The focus ring is the first massive improvement I noticed. On the preproduction model it was Sony-like; obviously a servo, and usable, but not in any way precise. I complained like a Wal-Mart shopper standing in the return line the day after Christmas, and man, did they improve it! The focus ring is exquisitely perfectly precise. 100% repeatable, perfectly usable with a follow-focus etc. It's at least as good as the DVX's, if not even better.

There were some minor software issues in the preproduction version that have been fixed in the production model, which is good news of course. But as far as resolution/noise/etc., I'd have to shoot comparable footage to know for sure. It appears to be comparable, but I can't say for sure. It looks fantastic, I can say that.

What happens when you hit the two extremes (e.g. closest or infinity)? Does the ring keep rotating or does it stop?

It keeps rotating. That's the price you pay for having autofocus. The internals stop moving, of course, just like a hard-stop lens would. But the ring keeps moving. It is almost a given that Century will produce a hard-stop focus ring for the HVX just like they did for the DVX, which would give you hard stops and performance that I would dare say would be indistinguishable from a physical manual lens (with the exception, of course, that the distance markings on the HVX will be extraordinarily more useful than the barrel markings on a typical broadcast lens).
