Barry in STUDIO!!!

Barry has a cool tip article about slowing dvx footage down smoothly in this months copy of "Studio" a brand new magazine out about Filmmaking and Sound Engineering. Check it out, I believe it's on page 38 but that could be completely wrong, I will update this when i find it around here so the page # is correct. :)

Re: Barry in STUDIO!!!

I did a search on Google for Studio magazine and found a ?french site.  Since I dont speak french, I chose the 'translate this page' option.  Very interesting...not the magazine you mention, I'm sure, but on the list of DVD releases for teh current issue was one called: "An elephant that misleads enormously & we all will go to the paradise".  I've only had two cups of coffee, but that does not make sense.   :)

I also would like to know if there is an online source for this magazine you speak of.

google makes the world like a village.

These two movies are really excellent especially the first one. Really very funny. Jean Rochefort (he would have to play Don Quichotte in Gillian's movie) is great.

I found it in imdb and the english title is : "An Elephant Can Be Extremely Deceptive"

I suscribed there about 19 days ago, still haven't got a copy :'(

Re: Barry in STUDIO!!!

We have a copy of it here at work. Barry's article is on page 54. No wait, that's what the TOC says, but it's wrong--it's actually on 56. Here's what Barry says, paraphrased (he's probably said it before on these here boards):

Do your project in 24P.
Shoot slo-mo at 30p.
Set playback rate to 80 percent (he uses Vegas).

That's it; frame-accurate, film-style slow motion. Not a big deal, but hey; we're talking about a $3k camera here.

Unfortunately it's only about 25 percent slower, but to be honest, this IS an established technique with film--the subtle slow-motion effect is used more often than you'd think, and often conveys a certain dreamlike effect.

This ain't gonna get you to Matrx-levels though, as they shot at up to 300fps.

Barry: let's say you did want to go to 25% of the original speed. Am I correct that you'd probably want to shoot in 60i?

Re: Barry in STUDIO!!!

I applied for a free sub, then I noticed their Jan. issue had an article I wanted to read. So I wrote and asked how much for a back issue: twenty bucks!! Yeah, right. If it's a monthly, that makes my free sub worth...$240! Wow. ;)

25% as in, simulating 96fps? 60i will give you more samples, but I wouldn't try to do an off-speed simulation like that. 40% is about as slow as I'd think you'd want to go; at 40% playback speed you get 60i turned into 60fps, and it's smooth and slow. Each field gets turned into a frame, so the motion sampling is consistent and smooth. Going at off-speeds (like 38% or something) is going to guarantee jerkiness.

For slow-mo, the rates that are going to work best are: 30p at 80% in a 24p timeline, 60i at 50% speed in a 29.97 timeline, and 60i at 40% speed in a 24p timeline.

Re: Barry in STUDIO!!!

anybody who know a good way to convert 50i to 50 fps. Most times ive tried it just been a deinterlaced footage that is slowed down...
