Barry, DV50?

Hi all
Where I live I'll have to wait quite a while before TV broadcasters will broadcast HD.
Before, I'll promote HD contents for the web and for corporate clients as soon as HD-DVD and Blue ray appears. Right now it's only SD.
What a nice dvcproHD footage from the HVX (many thanks to Barry, Jarred, Mikko, and all of you). But downrezzing to SD seems to be worst than directly shoot SD. Maybe with a good downconverter that's not true, but at what price?
Nobody interested on a side by side comparison between HVX dvcpro50 and DVX dv?
Many thanks for posting this kind of test

Alvise

I think this is super important specially for the EU market where HD is still in an experimental stage. There is some time before the HVX will be introduced here, so a good SD shoot with the HVX can bring us a new view.

An direct SD shoot (that is an internally convertion I think) as well as a post convert please.

Hi Alvise,

For what it's worth, I used Vegas to take Barry's WM9 1080 footage and made a standard def DVD from it. Even using the WM9 source footage created an SD product that was exceptionally good, much cleaner than anything you could have done with the DVX, IMO.

Now, will DVCPRO 50 be just as good? I expect so, based on the way the camera samples the original image to cross or down convert. But again, originating in SD locks out the future of HD. You can always make amazing SD from HD, but never amazing HD from SD...

I agree with Jim,

I downsampled some some HVX's images with Final Cut Pro built in scaler, and it looked
100% OK, no visible artifacts, and it looked much better than images from the DVX.

yeah but you can get longer recording times with dv50 versus hd. for the real world, the dv50 option seems so much more practical at this juncture.

I converted the 1080h264 (59.95 )pool table to MJPEG(b) 29.99 and then to mpeg4 scaled to 1/2. Image looks good, but I can´t remove 3:2 pulldownn to get 24p out of it. So it stutters. I tried the convert in 1080h264 to 24P but it was no good either (the movement) I think the original 24P h264 file with its strange behavior in 59.95 is creating the troubles.

I just work in QT-PRO for PC here so I do not have much editing possibilities. That is another computer:) .

Hi Alvise,

I imported Barry's QT H264 movie in a 4:3 DVCPro50 timeline.
It adjusted automatically the size and because it was a native 16:9, it was displayed as letterbox.
I adjusted the scaling render quality setting (in the motion tab) to "best".
Looked very very nice.

I could have imported in a anamorphic timeline also for DVD to 16:9 monitor.
