Barcode questions

I just finished my first commercial project and now I am working on the packaging. I need to get a bar code and after doing some research I discovered it is expensive. One site quoted it cost $750 to get one barcode. Does anyone know a cheaper or better way. It is for US retail.

things must be different with films as they are with music...no cd i ever recorded didn't include the barcode for free. i'm curious about this one as well.

I handled all aspects of this production it's kinda a documentary type deal. I designed the packaging and I think I need to provide my own barcode. From what I have read to have a upc barcode you need to register your company.... It's kinda confusing. I'm so close to finishing I am starting to think f**k it I will pay. I need to start getting some returns from this project. If it makes any difference I am getting the packaging made outside the US and they are asking me to provide my own barcode.

You can generate your own barcodes for free
http://www.barcoding.com/upc/
But the bigger question is why and what do you want it to say and relate to what database? A barcode in and of itself has no value unless it is useful in some sort of system and use by someone. You need a reference unless you already have codes of some sort.

You would use a service like the one mentioned above (and at this link)
Exactly because the codes do mean something. Outfits like this have registered with the UPC database and your product becomes one of their "products". This saves you the huge hassle of becoming a company registered withe the UPC folks so you can generate bar codes. I've seen a few other places that do it cheap or free. It doesn't really cost them anything (after the initial registering), except keeping track of the numbers they have issued so there aren't any duplications.

That is what I was looking for and what I meant by "easier" :dankk2:

Just out of curiosity, why a barcode, not an isbn number (with related barcode) if its to be sold thru catalogs?

It isn't going to be sold through catalogs. I plan on selling it locally.
My subject is a location so it probably wouldn't interest many others,
but I will be selling it online later. What is the difference? This is my
first commercial production.

Okay so I ordered one from that link. They didn't get any information on the product though. So does that mean that each individual customer has to set it in their system? Sorry this is my first time and I am scared to order a large order if something with the designs are wrong. I mean how bad would that look if there is a barcode, but it doesn't work. I appreciate your guys help.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but I think every store enters in the data by hand (or doesn't) the number is for inventory tracking and as long as it's legit and not a duplicate the system is happy.

Generating and registering a barcode are two separate things. In order to use this barcode in retail stores, it needs to be properly registered. That is where the cost is really incurred. Just having a barcode is not enough, it needs to be a unique code, so as to not conflict with anything else in the retail store. If you just grab one without having it registered, you run the risk of conflicting with another product, and being rejected as a product in that store/chain.

So be careful you are not throwing money away.
