Barackula, First Musical on RED Camera

I think it's the first musical shot on the RED. Doesn't matter either way. I directed the film and it's now online at www.barackula.com. Check it out. It's twelve minutes with credits. Basically the film is about a young Barack Obama at Harvard Law School and how a secret society of vampires attempts to convert him to their dark side. It's all tongue-and-cheek, just good fun. MTV and Hardball with Chris Matthews did a story on it.

We're gonna post 720p and 1080p versions later this week, but for now we have two smaller sized versions, including one for your iphone/ipod.

Hope you like the film.

Interesting. Funny musical and well shot.
You seemed to break the 180 rule a few times. When he was talking to the head Vampire. Was that on purpose?

The movie looked great, the songs were catchy, and it was entertaining.

Cheers!

that was fun.

was that your first musical?

if so some tips would/advice for anyone else interested in making one would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you. It was my first musical definitely. Basically we asked our friend Victor Tang to do the choreography. He used to be a professional dancer. His experience with some dance and martial arts choreography helped quite a bit. Most of our dancers weren't experienced dancers, but Victor did a great job getting them to learn the routine quickly. My friend Gavin and Justin (who plays Barack) did the music, and another friend Matt mixed and mastered the sound. I think having good music is key.

I was a little frightened to do a musical. I watched a ton of them to prepare (as well as vampire films) but my biggest advice would be to find a good choreographer and decent dancers (and of course people who can sing), all not hard to find. We used a few steadicam shots during the music, which I think helped. I'd recommend adding some movement with either steadi/dolly/jib shots too, but that of course depends on the type of song and what you're going for. Our dp, Mark, has worked on many music videos and that was a big help.

I don't think making a musical is all that different making any other film. Just add the choreography, good music (which you'll record beforehand) and it's all the same IMO.

Hope this helps. I'm pretty tired, I know I'm not being very articulate.

Mike, it was so funny! I forwarded it to a few friends that take delivery of thier RED One's in the next two weeks... One happens to be a professor of business and finance. I'm sure he enjoyed more than you will know...

Very well done, the footage looked great!

In regards to making a musical:

I'm gearing up to do a short musical here in a couple weeks. Did you record the songs with the actual actors before hand? Our problem is we might not be able to get the actors beforehand, so we're contemplating having someone else do the singing and doing proper ADR afterwards.

Do you foresee any potential pitfalls with that?

Thanks.
