Thanks for all of the excellent suggestions.

Typically I only need to hang a 4 Bank KinoFlo or a couple of small fresnels.

I think I might just try and buy some pipe locally and use a mafer clamp to hang the lights from.

Although, I'm really intrigued by that Mega Boom.

Having a few safety cables on hand is always a good idea - steel cables with loops on the ends and a carabiner. You can get them anywhere cinema or DJ lights are sold - but often on ebay they're the cheapest, DJ outfitters sell 'em in packs of 6, 10, 12, etc.
