Banding artifact with GH1 video

I am getting this horrible banding in some of my videos. I have included a screen grab of one particularly bad example. The wall to the left has lots of banding, like its only got limited color depth. The odd part is that the problem only occurs in area of little detail so its not the mud problem.

Shot with GH1 in P mode in FHD. I am unsure what the ISO was set at, possibly as high as 1600. The video was imported with iMovie. What do you think, iMovie transcode sucks or maybe high ISO causes this kind of problem. I have no idea myself hopefully its not a problem with GH1's codec

This is discussed at length in other threads. Shots with areas 3-stops underexposed will have fixed pattern banding from the CMOS sensor regardless of ISO...however it is possible to shoot excellent high-contrast stuff with the GH1.

did you make this?

if so im impressed. though it does take balls of steel to even try to duplicate Cronenweth. i had to hit mute though... i couldn hear that guys voice do that to that dialogue...

This is most likely the source of your problem here. Keep your ISO 400 or under for big screen work, 500 or under for TV sized presentations, and 640 or under for web. And perhaps most importantly stay out of all the program modes (like P). Custom motion picture only.

Nope. I thought the comment on it by by same name/portrait would then make it redundant for me to say I didn't but I guess not.

It's nice huh?

I haven't shot anything that contrasty with mine yet but I expect to as I am a big film noir guy...I'd like to think I've shot some nice footage though.

Yeah, I make no claim to be a good actor, or to be able to mimic M. Emmet Walsh's voice. The original plan was to have my friend Speed Levitch play Bryant. The joke was going to be hearing Capt. Bryant's endless exposition delivered in his crazy, New York voice. But Speed wanted to be the hero. He wanted to be Deckard. So I got stuck playing Bryant.

As far as duplicating Cronenweth, I don't know if I succeeded, but you gotta aim high, you know? This is the first time I've tried to completely replicate (no pun intended) a scene. I learned from it. I placed my backlight in the wrong spot on the Deckard CU. Too much hitting his nose. I also learned that using a hazer is a ***** on a large set.

Either way it is a great idea. I used to do this in film school. We used to pick a scene and try to recreate it just like you are now. It really helps you look at the image and try to imagine what could be done for the look. When it is over you learn a lot. Nice job.
