Balancing my HPX170 w/ Glidecam HD-4000

Hey Guys,

I'm having an extremely difficult time balancing my HPX170 on a Glidecam HD-4000. I have gone through the instructions included with the system and gotten the drop time down to 2.5 seconds. I'm using an extra boom mic stand I have to hold the system up while I do my horizontal/vertical balance. It seems right when I do it like that, but when I actually use the system there is a lot of horizontal "give". I have been studying techniques and know that it takes a LONG time to use this system right. However, I just can't seem to feel that I've gotten it balanced correctly.

Has anyone else set up this combo (I'm sure somebody has) and have any tips to making sure I have it balanced correctly? I can record what is occurring when I shift from side to side and punch with it. I mostly see it when I make turns and it tends to lean horizontally.

Looking forward to your help.

Thanks,
RJ

When I started with it I lengthened the stem for a 1.5 second drop and practiced there. It's a little choppy but more stable. Once I got the hang of it I shortened the stem for the 2.5 sec drop and things were better. It does take practice though.

Also, if you've got the vest max out the weight with the plates to 18lbs (sled & camera). The dead weight helps a lot.

Definitely don't have the vest. That would save my arm so much. I'll try with a different drop time to see if that helps. Thanks!
