FS7: Bag suggestion

Titles says all, I'm looking for a bag (backpack or shoulder bag) for my fully assembled FS7 (and spare for 1 or 2 lenses, battery, etc) when I'm in a run & gun rush on multiple locations and don't have much time to disassemble everytime. What are you guys using ?

Ned, the Portabrace looks very nice, thanks for the link. I have used their bags for year and the quality is excellent. Just wondering if it would fit under the seat in front of me, need to check the dim. Since I also have a overhead roller when I fly often.

For air travel when I don't need quick access I plan to pack it into the pelican 1510 and lenses. I have a picture on twitter of the fitment. It just fits vertically with shape VCT baseplate.

There is no pick/pluck on the very bottom but baseplate protects and at the top where the mic shock mount is as thats the tallest point of the camera.

I bought the CB40 Highroller in order to have a less airline compliant all in one ready to pull out adjust and go. (although I think it lists as compliant but I can't see it happening)

Thanks for that. Nice to know it will physically fit. I have some new Trekpak dividers on order so will see if I can come up with a configuration that frees up more space for other items too for when I need to fly with it.

Post a pic with what you come up with. Pick/pluck is such a waste of space as you can see from the picture lots of spare room for bits and bobs but anything more precise and the foam starts to fail and fall apart.

I used to have a deconstructed Red Scarlet in one with the Trekpak dividers so this should be less of a challenge :)

Will certainly post once it arrives.

If I get some lead up to a flight I will be looking into trekpak. The verticle height of the camera was the tricky part when fitting it length wise. I plan to pretty much leave the baseplate on but when fitting it was a dummy and didn't take the rails off which might just have allowed it to fit width wise freeing up a lot of space.

For air travel I'm using a Calumet rolling camera case for the camera and a couple of batts. Lenses, more batts, charger, filters etc in a Lowe Pro Vetex 300 and more lenses and other bits in a Tenba Messenger. Only problem is it's a two man carry-on. So far, it's done sixteen flights including 10 internally in the US where I had to go into full charm mode to get on with my gear. The bean counters really have sucked all of the joy out of air travel in the US...

A new bag product is on the market now from ORCA http://www.orcabags.com/product/orca-shoulder-video-bag/ . Orca-OR6.jpg This OR-6 will be too large for flying but is an excellent kit bag for local travel it is a solid product. There are other sizes of shoulder bags as well as back pack configurations that might be usable for some flights/planes. Ned, I like the Portabrace for the camera and one lens, but where does the EVF go? Online research shows the Portabrace bag dimensions at 21x10x12. Most airline seat dims look a little tight... that said I suppose that if you are on the window you might have more space than on the aisle. Front/middle/rear can also impact exact space. different airlines have different sizes... Unfortunately it is not the same plane to plane/airline to airline and commuter planes are a whole different discussion.

use 'wingrove' for a discount code and at the moment they have some other discounts going on and I think you can double up.

Alternately make your own with some correx and 1/8" foam :)

EDIT: That Orca bag looks quite good. A little smaller than the (now discontinued) Kata One Man Band 74 I just bought but if they do one size up from that I'm sure it would be great. Any ideas on prices?

This is the exact use I'm currently using the CineBags CB40 for. If you look at the picture link I posted (no idea how to imbed pics from twitter) I have the camera fit in it with everything ready to go except the loupe attachement 3 lenses, baseplate, charger, 3 batts, card reader, cards pretty much every camera essential in one bag for local gigs or generous air travel. I still don't know how they figure its supposed to be airline compliant. Maybe in the 80s or something.

Amazing thanks for the tip. Oh that Wingrove is there anything he doesn't have his hands into?

ha! bless him.

I actually have a Cinebags CB20 (or is it 30?) here which is the same size as the CB40 but without the wheels and is supposed to be carry on safe but there's no way it would pass on any airline I know, plus I couldn't make a nice fit for the FS7 with it with the top handle staying on.

Ya its tight on the zipper where the monitor rod knuckle is but I managed to get it zipped in. If I didn't have the baseplate on I image the camera height wouldn't be an issue at all in the CB40 at least not for me. With how easy this camera is to grab & go having a 'grab & go' bag was essential to me.

I don't like the thought of my camera being vibrated in a rolling bag or being hopped over curbs in a roller. I am considering the Porta Brace CTC-3. Don't know for certain that it will fit well, but going by the specs it should. I prefer the clamshell type bags that provide easy access. The clamshell type bags are what I am used to as I used them for years with beta cams.

The size bag you will need depends upon the configuration of the camera. If you plan on obtaining the extension back and using a shoulder plate with rods the camera will need a larger bag than if the camera is in it's out of the box config. Same if you eventually plan on having something like the Angenieux DP rouge zoom or Canon 17-120mm living on the camera.

The rub for any storage is that grip arm. I don't see any way that it won't have to be re-positioned when storing the camera in a case or bag. I have already purchased a rosette spacer that will hopefully allow the arm greater positioning. I can foresee that rosette becoming worn from frequent use as happens on tripods. When you reposition the grip arm make sure you loosen the rosette mount fully. Don't just loosen it a bit and then grind the teeth when repositioning. Unfortunate that the control grip is not attached via a system that can be easily removed like the one for the point where the arm mounts to the camera body. I would like to mount the control grip on 15mm rails and ditch the wonky arm altogether. It appears that it detaches with four screws.
