FS7: Bad WiFi Dongles?

I know of 2 WiFi dongles for the FS7 that have gone bad in San Francisco recently. Happen to anyone else. Mine is OK so far.

In what situations are you guys using the Wi-fi? I've never even played with it and would likely struggle to find the dongle thingy that came with my camera.

Never used the GPS either. I think maybe I'm boring and incurious. Although I am curious as to the genesis of the word "dongle".

First use of dongle I can remember is the one that cam with an Avid or 3D Studio system as an anti piracy device back in the 90s.

Never used wifi or gps on my FS7 either.

Wifi or NFC on my stills camera to edit in lightroom mobile on ther other hand is v cool.

I was actually pleasantly surprised how easy & well this works. Haven't used mine a great deal - but it's fantastic when on a large jib - or when camera needs to mounted in places not easy accessible to operator - or if say trying to film wildlife in close confines. Mine stays on the camera (with this little plastic cover that came with it).

ah yes, the little bag of assorted bits of plastic that nobody ever said what they're for. Not lost it or worked them out after 2 years. I now know what one of them is, at least.

Is "dongle" a word we have you Brits to thank for? Like "wanker" and "bollocks"?

Is Sam better off to avoid telling attractive women that his dongle "got snapped off"??

In fairness, most words in the English language you have us to thank for - even the ones that came from French, German or Latin we sifted through and hand selected them. ;)

I do a lot of multicam shoots for a local bank and they already own an FS7 so we sometimes have 2 or 3 on a shoot. With the wifi dongle a single engineer/tech has access to the menus on all the cameras and can make sure all the settings match and can initiate roll and stop also. I think maybe even playback but i don't remember about that. You need to have 1 wifi device ( iPad, iphone, or laptop) for each camera and its far from perfect but its better than nothing. Unfortunately with the FS7 you only have access to basic settings on the computer screen . If you want to go further in the menus you can do it but you need to take over the menus on the sdi out which can interfere with the needs of your client to monitor picture. On the F5 and F55 all the menus are available to the wifi device. Don't know why the FS7 is hobbled in that way.

Perpetual - did you dongle break off or just stop working like ours?

I didn't even know where my dongle was (hmm, that sounded strange...) but yesterday went through the packing and found it in it's own box, much larger than it. I'll be (hopefully) using it to wirelessly pull focus.

Out of interest Lenny, WTF is your local bank doing with their own FS7 - and what sort of multicam shoots do you do regularly for them?!?!?!

My mind is on the verge of boggled just trying to imagine such an image-conscious bank! :shocked:J/K ... I imagine it's not all for promo, but am still very curious to know WHAT it IS for!

Cheers,

jason

P.S. Never actually tried to use my dongle (ohhhh errrrrr vicar), but this thread is tempting me to see what it can do! :-)

The Bank is Wells Fargo, so its far from local and they have a very active and well supplied video department though crews usually freelance. As for what the hell they are about. I haven't the slightest idea frankly as I find it impossible to concentrate on the content. Probably mostly internal training and communication. Sometimes the videos are for customers, but its not mainly for PR as that would be commercials which are far more high budget. I've seen lots of corporate stuff like that though.
