Bad Vimeo! Bad Vimeo!

Okay, so I tried putting a short film I made on Vimeo last night and after it was loaded, I tried to view it. It was all jerky and the motion was plagued with interlace combing. So what did I do wrong? This was the first time I've tried using Vimeo.

gonna need more info as what you did to see whats wrong, like export settings and the NLE you use

i used fcp's quicktime export of high bandwidth for internet streaming and it comes out a decent size and good quality once on vimeo ive used it on my 2 videos that just show things quickly like a polarizer test but came out nicely

I shot the film at 24pN and edited it on Adobe Premiere Elements 1.0 on a 29.97 timelime. Elements does not have a 24p timeline.

hes using a dvx i believe
and he just means 24p (not A) and (not N)

i dont use premier but export as a high quality file, add frame blending to get rid of all the jerkyness and smooth it out?

Tashbee,

Yes, I am using a DVX100B, so I do not have HD capability. I exported the video from Elements as an Mpeg2 file and it plays perfectly from the file. The problem started after I uploaded to Vimeo.

very weird that it is only vimeo causeing the problem, maybe its not really a fan of mpeg?
i use quicktime .mov and it seems to work alright for me once they are uploaded
maybe just try another format export

thats the only problem i could see happening with your footage once it gets to vimeo

yea looks like its working, ill have to watch it when im home with sound
instead of at work and silent :)

quicktime should work alright on vimeo

it must just be the mpeg2 if it works on youtube

I just finished exporting to Quicktime and the results were very bad. As a control, to see if it was just that video, I exported another video to Quicktime and it was just as bad. I wonder if deinterlacing before I upload would help?

"Interlace combing"? Try pulldown presence.

When you shoot at 24p and edit on a 29.97 timeline the pulldown is present so that playback will appear as 24fps to the eye. When encoded as mpeg2 the pulldown is still going to be there. Encoding that to a program which expects each frame to be either two distinct fields or the same image or one non interlaced frame will reek havoc when you are sending it frames that have interlaced fields not of the same image but of two fields interlaced from two distinct images which is what a pulldown frame is. Its a combined frame. In the case of how you shot, you'll have two of these combined frames in your timeline for every 5 frames where as in 24pa mode you'll have one of these combined frames every 5 frames. When someone edits in a 24p timeline the pulldown, regardless of type, is normally removed.

All Vimeo is doing is encoding everything you sent its way including the pulldown. Lose the pulldown and your file will encode just fine.

Paladin,

The DVX is probably a lot lighter than the 16mm film cams you used to use. Panning smoothly can be a pain with a light camera and I noticed a bit of jerkiness in some of your pans. One simple trick is to use a rubber band to pan instead of panning by hand:

It's a simple trick, but it works wonders.
