Bad news from PAL HVX

To test compression, you cannot do it with still images. Make a shot in movement, then freeze the frame and make a 400% zoom. You will see the difference.
In other hand, try it with color correction. Use a weird LUT and you will see also the difference. This is helpful to know how far can you go in color grading. You will see the difference between the hvx and any other HDV format in this terms.
I am totally amazed about how far can you go recovering information on highlights.

Let me just warn everyone now that I won't allow a sixty page thread of people freaking out about lowlit footage. For Pete's needs (lowlight shooting in uncontrolled settings) the HVX is probably not the best tool for his doc work. He's free to show grabs, but if people start kicking up sand...well you know what happens. :)

So we can’t discuss lowlight and the HVX performance in that instance?

We shot some roofs with lots of rooftiles i.e. lots of details, captured both scenes in FCP with no problem,(720/25p can not be captured in FCP yet...) took stills out of the time line - magnified each shot up to 400% - AND SAW NO DIFFERENCE. except for some chromatic aberration on the part of the FX 1 which the HVX did not have. <snip>

Actually Pete, that's pretty good news for HVX fans. In resolution tests the FX1/Z1 generally outperforms the HVX. If you didn't notice a difference in a resolution test that's more "real world" (ie. not just a B&W test chart), I'd have to say super! The fact that the HVX was missing the chromatic aberations that the FX1 had is even better. Thanks for the report!

Hehehe, that´s a good one!

Serious, when will someone finally show some HVX shot scenes that simply beat the crap out of the other aspirants...?
I mean, there is superb stuff shot with the Z1 and a 35mm adapter (can´t remember the name of the movie, just think of McGregors stuff...) or the music video from Nate and his HD100 - I just want to see sth that knocks me out of my shoes!!!
Hell, I want to believe...

Have you seen anything by Bob Gundu, Steev Dinkins, Cassidy Bisher, Kevin Railsback, etc? There's tons of footage out there that shows the HVX looking way better than anything anyone can dredge out of a Z1...

I really like the stuff coming from Cassidy Bisher and Bob Gundu. The blue screen examples Cassidy posted recently looked great. The wolf footage from Kevin was also amazing.

I think the HVX is more geared for well-lit, narrative, filmmaking -- not docs. This is my fourth week with the HVX and as much as I love it, I would not use this camera for shooting documentaries with all-natural light sources. It's just not the best tool for the job.
However, if you can get some decent light and the P2 workflow is manageable for what you're doing, this thing makes beautiful pictures! For what I'm be doing, it's perfect.

Well, just tell that to Marc Singer!

He seems to really love the camera, and is quite a reputable fellow in therms of documentary making...

Hi darwinandpaine - thanks a lot for that simple but profound and helpful comment.
I do not at all dispute the possibilities von the HVX 200 - but the camera has to fit to the job - not vice versa . So unfortunately it seems that the HVX is just not the one for me.

I´m really looking forward testing the PAL HVX myself, mainly because i hope that the DV50 mode will finally give me better quality SD video.
And this of course with a cinematic look and feel to it (some refer to it as the "pana mojo"...).
I have many doubts about the HVX, because of all the suboptimal issues HVX owners have reported so far - BUT every semi-pro HD cam out there seems to have it flaws and even film won´t guarantee good looking footage when shot under bad lighting or available light, just look at old documentaries...
If the picture of the HVX only looks like an oversized image from the DVX, this camera still should fit many, many needs...

I think you'll be happy with DVCPro50 Spartacus. I'm using a PAL camera so the rez is a litle bit higher. It has much smoother edges, and much nicer color than DV. It is like digi-beta. It seems very clean too, but I'm filming a proper shoot with it tomorrow night for the first time so I'll see how DVCPro50 mode goes in lots of different lighting conditions.

And editing in Avid is so easy, just like editing DV but better quality footage.

booth,
I REALLY would like to see how the HVX performs in DV50 mode!
Could you share some clips, after shooting tomorrow night?
Everyone just focuses on HD ,well understandably, but for me it´s just not practical right now...
So you edit in Avid - are you using the MatroxDV50 codec or is DV50 a part of the Avid package?
