Bad hiss

At work, we've recently upgraded our mic to a Shure KSM 32. This mic
requires phantom power so we routed it through our symetrix 528e voice processor back into the Tascam M-108 which feeds the avid. I'm getting a bad hiss, now, but I'm sure it's the the way it's being routed, and not the mic itself, because I get the hiss even if the mic is disconnected.
I've tried all manner of fixes, but the only thing that helps is EQ and it takes the character out of voice, so that's out too. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Hi David,

Sorry to hear about the hiss problem. What you can try is eliminating each unit from the chain and sort out what is causing the hiss. You've already mentioned that the hiss still exist when the mic is not plugged.

First, turn down the trim/gain of your Symetrix and see if the hiss is still present. If it's still present, try turning off your Symetrix unit and see if the hiss still exist. If it goes away, then your voice processor is the culprit. If the hiss goes away after you turn down the gains, then the noise floor of your unit is really high. Work your way down until the hiss goes away.

pretty much what Alas said. Start at the microphone cable, and work your way towards the computer, one cable at a time.

You might also check your gain stages. You should not have any level control "cranked". Ideally they will all be in the 50%-75% range.
