Bad Golf Course Interview Footage

As mcgee pointed out, nets would bring the BG down, but wind could be a problem.

I know you wanted a light-free solution, but this is what I would have used.

A battery powered HMI like the Kobold 200w Reporter Light (about $2750 for just the light and battery, another $1700 for the AC ballast) would definitely make the subject pop in the shade. I've rented them (cheap, from a friend) many times for dealing with the Florida sun.

Even if you couldn't afford buying one, the light and battery could be rented for about $250/day. You could have your accountant deduct the rental as an expense.

Without an HMI, I might have tried putting him in the sun, with a silk on a couple of C stands to soften the sun. You could also use an HMI additionally in this situation.

I meant to suggest this sooner, but you've already done your reshoot. Maybe some of this is food for thought in the future.
Hope the reshoot went well.

Thank you for all the light info, I will be adding one of these portable lights to my kit soon. In the meantime here is the re-shoot. I did not dot not have daylight balanced lights. Shot with my cheap lowel kit, 2 softboxes and a lowel pro in the back. Turned out I shut the left side (of his face) softbox off as the sun was coming in on his left side. Had on a circular polarizer filter as well. There is no color correction done at all.

Here it is:

I am a little slow as I have been editing all day long, what is CTB? Yes he is red naturally but I suspect it was the combination of daylight and warmer lights.

CTB=color temperature blue and CTO=color temperature orange.

Daylight (5600K) is at the blue end of the color temperature scale.
Tungsten (3200K) is at the red/orange end of the scale.

CTB gel turns 3200K tungsten light cool blue so it matches daylight, once you white balance for daylight.

CTO gel turns 5600K daylight (usually from HMIs) warm red/orange so it matches tungsten.

If you have blue gel in your Lowel kit, it's probably CTB (unless you have lots of "party" color gels).
Clip it to your barn doors and balance in it to use your lights in the daylight.
It works best on an open face light- you have an Omni light?

If you put (a large sheet of CTB) on a softbox, you won't be left with much light for shooting in the sun.

If an interview subject has reddish skin, it will be made worse by using tungsten lights when shooting in daylight.
