BACKWATER short film

once again i am blown away, Michael. your photography is beautiful.

did you shoot this in 1080 or 720?

those zeiss lenses look incredibly sharp. it's rare to come by hvx 35mm footage that looks that sharp & crisp.

Thanks so much. 720 24pn. I should experiment with 1080. I've been going for 720 because I tend to do a lot of subtle (and not so subtle) slow mo.

Thanks fellas. jcool, I wish I could have shot this piece in Georgia... No easy task trying to get a southern gothic mood in Vermont!

Great work Michael!

The piece has a really haunting mood to it - great images!

Nicely done. Beautiful all thru, what was your lighting setup like? did you use natural light for all the outdoor shots? I love this piece. Great job man!!

Jinks,

Thank you. I like your Avatar. I did a lot of still photography at the locations and found certain times of day that provided some nice natural lighting effects. I had no crew so couldn't do a lot of additional lighting outside. I set up a bounce on a c-stand a number of times. And actually wish I had done that less. It's so tempting to me to imagine I need to improve on what's there and that I'm being lazy if I don't but there were a few takes where the contrasty less filled in image was superior. I added a few grads in post to darken in some of those areas. Other than that, I had a 200w HMI with a battery that lasted about 8 min. in case I got stuck. I used it once to rim him in the window of the church as there was no power in that old building. I got off the one take that's in the movie before it died. Church night Int. shots were done in a more controllable space and I lit those with a tungsten unit coming straight down on the candles and a 400w diva warmed up and diffused on him that I was dimming up and down while blowing lightly on the candles.

Wow - amazing photography. The compositions in this piece are fantastic, I think its the best short Ive seen on the HVX. Congrats!

Thank you. I appreciate you mentioning the compositions. I tend to start with an idea for a story, but for me that's nothing without compositions that appeal to my sensibilities. The story at times fleshes out hand in hand as I find the images. Maybe a backwards way of working but I've found I need a strong image with merit unto itself almost to justify each story point.

If I don't get a "Booom" on subsequent films I post, I'll be deeply disappointed. Thank you.

why do some people mention noise with the HVX, what noise? unless they're using gain, or filming under really dark conditions. nice lighting

Thanks. Yeah, I agree. Unless badly underexposing, the HVX image has been clean in my experience. And I think can be pushed around fairly substantially in post. Just shot a short with 7D. Hope to share soon. We shot at 160 ISO. Seems remarkably clean so far.
